Space Saving Tips

Check out these great storage ideas, and you will be surprised to see the amount of space you suddenly seem to have!

Do you have a wide passage and small bedrooms? Consider placing your wardrobe out in the passage. Build a wardrobe flushed to one wall, along the length of the passage outside your bedroom, if there is such a passage. This will give you more space in your bedroom. Alternatively, you could keep a small wardrobe in your bedroom for a few essentials or for your daily wear clothes, and you could keep everything else, like coats, jackets, shoes, bags, belts, ties, sweaters, party-wear, heavy saris and salwar kameezes, in the wardrobe in the passage. Make sure you keep that wardrobe locked though, and don't put jewellery in it.

For added safety, keep a door at the end of the passage, to lock out the living room from the passage and the other bedrooms.

Realise that you will be spending the maximum amount of time in your bedrooms, and the time in the passage, so make the maximum use of storage in the passage.

Make a false ceiling in your passage to store bulky suitcases, instead of storing them in your bedroom. They add to the clutter in your bedroom. If your bedroom is large, then by all means make a separate compartment above wardrobe in your bedroom for the suitcases.

Instead of keeping your summer and winter wardrobe in your cupboard at the same time, place the wardrobe not in use in a suitcase, and exchange clothes when the seasons change. This reduces clutter in your cupboard. You will have more space in your cupboard, so you can keep the things you will be wearing in better condition, and you will be able to find things easily without having to sift through piles of clothes you will not be wearing for a while.

While its great to be able to have lots and lots of shoes, to match every outfit, who has the space to store so many shoes? The result is that even if we have a matching pair, we will probably just pick out the shoes right in front of us that are easy to locate. A great option for storing shoes is to pick up a canvas shoe bag, which is a sheet, with pockets for shoes. You can hang the sheet anywhere behind your bedroom door or inside your wardrobe door. This not only saves space, but also helps keep shoes in better condition, so they are not piled one on top of the other in a drawer at the bottom of the cupboard. You could use that space for other things, such as quilts, blankets, bedcovers etc. Needless to say, you wouldn't be able to hang a blanket behind your cupboard door, would you?

Always, always have storage inside beds. Try and make pull out drawers, so your back will not break everytime you need to remove something.

And finally, instead of investing in yet another painting, invest in a mirror. Make effective use of mirrors. Place a mirror one end your dining room, to add to the length of the room. The mirror doesn't have to be huge. Even a two-foot by three-foot mirror should serve the purpose.
