Double marker test is a test that is done in prenatal test to test for Down's Syndrome. A child with Downs syndrome is not able to live a normal life so this tests helps detect the possibility of this disease before a set period. This test should be done by all women who get pregnant after 35 years as the risk of Down syndrome increases with age.
This test is done after 14 weeks of pregnancy and can be done up to 20 weeks. This detects chromosomal abnormalities in the foetus. so this is an important test and must be done by women who are in a risk category.
I agree this test is very important and should be done by all pregnant women who fall in the high risk category. Marriage age has gone up and now people are more into career than starting a family so the first pregnancy happens only after 35 yrs. The chances of having a baby with Down's syndrome is quite high in that age group. It is better to go for the test so that screening for chromosomal abnormality can be done. This test is perfectly safe and should be done.
Double marker test should surely be done by pregnant women who have conceived late. Late pregnancies carry high risk of developing birth defects so it is essential to get this test done so that right remedies can be suggested by doctor.
