Pinworm is caused by tiny worms but this infection does not cause much harm. Itching is common symptom. Mostly kids get this infection because they put their hands in their mouths often. Pinworm eggs can be found on contaminated hands and surfaces which is passed into the digestive system and hatch in small intestine. So basically as small kids are playing around and put the same hands in their mouths, the chances of having pinworm infection is common.

The major symptom is itching. My daughter had pinworm infection and she used to itch a lot. I know that if a small number of adult worms are there, then the infection will be mild and there may be no symptoms at all. Due to itching, the child has disturbed sleep and will be continuously itching the anal area especially at night when the female worms are laying eggs. In extreme cases there may be nausea or abdominal pain.

Pinworm is common in toddlers because they often put their hands in their mouths through which the infection spreads. While playing the children may get the pinworm eggs which get ingested when they put their hands in their mouth. These eggs once inside the stomach pass to intestine where they hatch and thus cause infection. The common symptom is itching.

The basic treatment of pinworm is through medication. Your child’s doctor may prescribe an oral medication. The child has to take the medicine for 2 weeks before it works. The itching may continue for 1 week. Basically oral medicines cure the infections completely.
