Mood swings is common during pregnancy and it could also lead to depression. This is all due to surge of hormones. Depression or mood swings are more common in first trimester or in the last trimester where there is more fluctuation of hormones. Feeling of sadness, irritability or inability to sleep, loss of appetite and being too anxious are common symptoms of depression. It is very important to take care of heath at this stage only because neglecting can lead to severe problems and may affect the health of the developing baby along with the mother. Simply taking time off to relax or indulging in hobbies can help in overcoming depression.

It is very difficult to manage the pregnancy symptoms. Dealing with mood swings and depression is the toughest as it affects others also. When we are feeling low, we tend to behave irrationally with others and this may lead to hurt or pain. Keeping oneself active can help dealing with mood swings. Exercises help in making feel good as they release feel good chemicals in the blood. So I feel all pregnant women need to be active, take a nutritious diet and exercise.

It is said that the depression which happen in pregnancy or antepartum depression are just like the normal depression which cause mood disorders. The chemical changes happening in the brain during the pregnancy cause these mood disorders and the hormonal changes which change the chemicals in the brain resulting in anxiety and depression.

It is very important to treat the depression if the mother is suffering from one. If this is not treated then there is risk to both the mother and baby. The mother can tend to have drinking, smoking habits, poor nutrition, suicidal behaviour and even premature birth. The baby born can have low weight and development problems. There women are not interested in taking care of herself as well as the baby.

It has been noticed that the babies which are born to mothers who are depressed are less active compared to other babies. Therefore it is important to seek help and talk to the doctor about all the problems and symptoms. The doctor will suggest various treatments for the mother.

There are various treatment options for depression available for the pregnant mothers like medications, taking light therapies, discussing the problems in a support group and also attending sessions at a private psychotherapy. Mostly medications are avoided as they have effects on the baby which is born like heart problems, low birth weight, physical disabilities and pulmonary hypertension.

Hi all the doctor once told me that the medications taken during pregnancy for depression pass through the placenta and reach the baby which might cause risk to the baby. It is necessary to visit the doctor and find a proper treatment under proper guidance and opt for the treatment which is safe and less risker to the baby.
