Folic acid supplements are a must when planning a baby as it helps prevent spinal cord and other birth defects. This vitamin has an important role in red blood cells production this helps your baby's neural tube develop into her brain and spinal cord.Birth defects usually occur within the first few weeks of pregnancy as during this time the baby's brain and spinal cord are going to develop.

Folic acid supplements are needed prior to conception and also after that. These help in preventing neural tube defects where brain and spinal cord development is incomplete.Even though folic acid is present in leafy green vegetables and orange juice, one needs to take supplements. It is recommended to take about 400 micrograms of folic acid daily. Birth defects that can be avoided with the intake of folic acid are spina bifida, anencephaly, and encephalocele.

Basically folic acid is a type of a vitamin, vitamin B and is also called as folate. Cereals are rich in folic acid and are one of the best sources of folic acid. The folic acid helps in the production of red blood cells and also plays an important role in the development of the neural tube into the brain and the spinal cord.

It is necessary for an expecting mother to take folic acid as in the first 3rd to 4th week of pregnancy there are possibilities of having birth defects. This is the reason the doctors recommend to take folic acid from the start of the pregnancy so that there are no problems during the development to the baby’s brain and spinal cord.

Several times there are pregnant women who choose their own prenatal vitamins, but it is important to go and check it with the gynaecologist to make sure if it is right or not. The amount of folic acid needed also should be asked to the doctor. All the prenatal vitamins vary from each other, so to be on the safer side it better to ask the doctor.

It is very important to know the amount of folic acid that should be consumed. Mostly the pregnant mothers are told to take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily. If you are taking a multivitamin tablet everyday then the amount should be checked with the doctor. There are options available if you don’t want to take multivitamins, like folic acid supplements.

There are various neural defects which might take place if there is not enough folic acid in your body. There are various neural tube defects like spina bifida which causes incomplete development of vertebrae and the spinal cord and anencephaly which means the parts of the brain are not properly developed. To avoid this it is important to take proper amount of folic acid.
