A cleft lip is a separation of the two sides of the upper lip and appears as a narrow opening or gap in the skin of the upper lip. The causes of cleft lip are not exactly known. It is due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It can also be due to to a medication the mother may have taken during her pregnancy.

my cousin's son has a cleft. It was really surprising as nobody in the family had this. I do not think there was any other problem but still it's a mystery. She was really sad to see her son like this. After surgery, her son is now ok.....

Cleft lip and cleft palate can be prevented by taking a multivitamin before conceiving and during pregnancy. If you're planning to get pregnant soon, begin taking a prenatal multivitamin.Avoid tobacco or alcohol. Use of alcohol or tobacco during pregnancy increases the risk of having a baby with a cleft defect.

Hello all, a cleft lip is a lip which is open in between the upper lip and the nose. This is caused due to the improper closing or joining of the lips. It can vary how it looks like just a spot in the lips or it is completely separate in one or both the sides of the lips.

Hi, the baby can receive all the benefits of breastfeeding regardless the cleft lip or cleft palate. The only difference will be in the method of feeding and the position of feeding. The baby will receive all the nutrition required for his growth and development.
