The most common birth defect in India is the Down syndrome. The major cause of Down syndrome is trisomy 21 and every one child in 800 babies has Down syndrome.

Hi, Down syndrome is caused due to one of the three type of abnormal cell division which involves chromosome 21. It can be caused due to trisomy 21, mosaic trisomy 21 or translocation trisomy 21.

Hello, trisomy 21 is the most common cause of Down syndrome. An extra chromosome 21 is originated in the development of egg or sperm. In mosaic trisomy 21 the extra chromosome 21 is present in some of the cells not all. In translocation trisomy 21 the extra chromosome is located on some different chromosome.

Hi all, the couples already having a child with Down syndrome because of translocation trisomy 21 have chances of having another baby also diagnosed with Down syndrome.

There are various risk factor involved which can cause Down syndrome like the age of the mother, if she is above 35 years of age it is a possibility that the eggs age there is a higher risk of the chromosomes to divide incorrectly.

If the previous child has been diagnosed with Down syndrome then they have a risk of the second child also having Down syndrome.

The Down syndrome can be detected by the help of a screening test which helps to diagnose the possibility of Down syndrome. These test do not give the exact result but they can indicate the chances of having one.

Hi, after a screening test you can possibly go for the further tests which are performed during your pregnancy like the amniocentesis in the 15th week of pregnancy, CVS test between the 9th and 14th week and PUBS test in the 18th week.
