My child is a wizard of numbers. When he was a toddler, he could recite numbers till 100 with ease. Gradually his love for numbers increased and he was able to add and subtract numbers when he was quite small. He also could recite the tables effortlessly. Then I realized that my son is gifted. I never tried to push him hard though but let him be his normal self. I always tried to encourage him though by helping him out when needed.
I never push my kids. I try to encourage them but I agree there is a thin line between pushing and encouraging. If not treaded patiently, then the child may find even encouragement too stifling. The parents have to know the capability of their kids so as to know where to draw the line. Letting the gifted child have some time for himself is the best way to go
