Harmful Effects of Vitamin Deficiencies in Kids




Nutritional deficiencies can lead to common deficiency disorders among kids. By substituting the junks with healthy snacks, most of these deficiency disorders can be prevented in kids. Read on to know about the health disorders caused in kids due to deficiency of important nutrients.

In most of the cases children today are well fed, but their diet lacks the essential components like B vitamins, zinc, folic acid, omega 3 fatty acids and magnesium.

It becomes difficult for the brain to produce norepinephrine and dopamine in sufficient amounts when her diet lacks these vital nutrients. ADHD resulting in impulsivity, hyperactivity and attention deficiency is common among kids these days. Those suffering from ADHD, exhibits common symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Deficiency of Omega3 Fatty Acids

Omega3 fatty acids are a type of dietary fat that helps to keep the neuronal membranes supple. A healthy diet shall ensure necessary supply of omega 3 fatty acid. Lack of this nutritional element produces symptoms like dry skin, mood swings, depression, and poor memory and so on.

Magnesium Deficiency

Your child does not need magnesium in high amounts, however; this does not mean you can undermine its value. Magnesium has been known to promote different functions in the body. Regular intake of magnesium can keep at bay problems like ADHD and asthma. Some of the symptoms of its deficiency include allergies, anxiety, poor impulse and hyper activity.

Deficiency of Zinc

Traces of zinc are also essential in child’s everyday diet. Proper zinc supplies shall strengthen child’s immune system; promote cell reproduction and protein synthesis. Lack of it in the diet can result in sudden behavioural changes, loss of hair and it might take longer for her wounds to heel as well.

Vitamin B Deficiency

B vitamins have immense role to ensure a healthy mind and body. Chronic lack of the B vitamins can actually lead to psychological problems. Those suffering from ADHD are generally suggested a diet rich in B vitamins. Deficiency symptoms include feelings of irritability, small attention spans, and chronic feelings of tiredness, insomnia and indigestion. If you think your child is suffering from ADHD, you must first consider taking her to a doctor. You need to follow a healthy dietary plan apart from the medications suggested to her.

Iron Deficiency

Iron deficiency in children has also become a common concern. The weekly diet must include a healthy combination of fruits, vegetables, grains, meat and milk. In case your child has been diagnosed with iron deficiency, she shall be given some iron supplements as well.

Deficiency of Vitamin D

Deficiency of D vitamin can result in hypophosphatemia and hypocalcemia in kids. They might also develop multiple sclerosis, asthma, type 1 diabetes and respiratory infections in its absence.

Deficiency of Vitamin C

Rickets can result from lack of calcium as well. In some cases, it might be important to offer supplemental calcium together with vitamin D.

Replenishing the missing nutrients is found to bring marked difference in child's development. A healthy diet shall help improve her performance in school. If you think the lifestyle practices you follow are not very healthy, do make an attempt to alter them. This shall help your child recover fast. This shall also help her excel in her academic career.

Discourage her to take the fast food meals and the junks to soothe her hunger pangs. Substituting the junks with healthy snacks shall ensure she gets all the vital nutrients. Nutritional deficiencies shall only get worse with the junks and fast foods.
