Kid-Friendly Cabbage Recipes




Cabbage is one of the vegetables that kids do not like to eat. Read on to learn about the different ways of cooking and serving cabbage to make your kids love eating it. Here are some kid-friendly cabbage recipes.


Parents agree that even though cabbage is a rich source of vitamin K, vitamin C and riboflavin, it is not easyto make kids eat it. Many parents must have tried some recipes and served cabbage in different ways to your kids. Some might have succeeded while some might have failed.

Well, here are some recipes that you can try and serve in intervals and make your kids eat the vegetable rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre. You can even pack some of the recipes in your kids' lunch box.

1. Cabbage paratha

Cabbage paratha is stuffed paratha and can help your child have a good start of the day. You can fill either cooked or raw cabbage and serve the parathas with chutney or any kind of sauce.

Ingredients
  • Cabbage - grated
  • Cottage Cheese (Paneer)
  • Chilli powder
  • Chat masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil
  • Wheat flour
Preparation
  • Knead the wheat flour to soft dough.
  • You can add a little bit of salt and 2 tsp. of oil if you want to make it soft.
  • Keep the dough aside for at least 30 minutes.
  • If you want to cook the grated cabbage, you need to heat some oil in the pan and add cabbage to it.
  • Saute the cabbage by adding chilli powder and salt for few minutes.
  • Put the flame off and add salt and chat masala to it according to the taste of your children.
  • Once the cabbage stuffing is cool enough, you can add grated cottage cheese to it and make small balls of the dough
  • Roll one ball in round shape and add the stuffing.
  • Now roll another ball and spread it on the top of it.
  • Slightly press and roast it on the frying pan by adding one tsp. of oil on both the sides of the paratha.
  • Serve hot with tomato ketchup or chutney. 
2. Cabbage Raita

Ingredients
  • Cabbage leaves – 2 to 3
  • Curd – 1/2 cup
  • Chilli powder
  • Sugar
  • Roasted and powdered cumin
  • Coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
Preparation
  • Cut the cabbage leaves into fine pieces
  • Take yogurt in a bowl and whip to make a smooth paste like consistency
  • Add cabbage and other ingredients and mix well
  • Scatter  finely chopped coriander leaves
  • Serve at room temperature or chilled
3. Cabbage and Peas

Ingredients
  • Cabbage – finely chopped
  • Onion – finely chopped
  • Green peas – 1/2 cup
  • Chilli powder
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp.
  • Oil – 2 to 3 tsp.
  • Salt to taste
  • Tomato – 2
Preparation
  • Heat oil in pan
  • Add cumin seeds till it chatters
  • Add chopped onion and cook till slight colour change
  • Add finely sliced tomatoes and all powdered masalas to it
  • Cover the pan and let the tomatoes soften for few minutes
  • Add cabbage with peas and cover the lid after stirring the entire vegetable
  • Let it cook while stirring in between
  • Serve with rotis, parathas or with fried rice.
4. Cabbage Roll

Ingredients
  • Cabbage – finely chopped
  • Onion – finely chopped
  • Chilli powder
  • Chat masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Wheat flour
  • Oil
Preparation
  • Heat 2 tsp. of oil in a pan and add the onions to it.
  • When the colour changes add cabbage and stir on medium-high flame.
  • Set aside to cool
  • Knead the wheat flour into soft dough by adding a little bit of salt and 2 tsp. of oil and water.
  • Cut small pieces of the dough in the shape of balls
  • Spread the balls by rolling into round rotis
  • Roast the rotis on frying pan without adding oil
  • When done, add 1 tsp. of oil on one side and lower the flame of the gas
  • Now add tomato ketchup and chutney on the other (dry) side and spread cabbage longitudinally.
  • Roll the roti and serve in a plate with ketchup or chutney according to the taste of individuals.
5. Cabbage Salad

Ingredients
  • Cabbage – shredded
  • Carrots – shredded
  • Tomatoes – cut in small pieces
  • Peanuts – roasted and grounded
  • Lemon juice – 2 tsp.
  • Coriander leaves – finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
Preparation
  • Take a large bowl
  • Add all the vegetables to it
  • Now add salt, lemon juice and coriander leaves
  • Serve with any kind of meal

Most of the vegetables can be included in sandwiches...It is very important to make kids eat vegetables.

Cabbage can also be included in sandwiches. It tastes really good with cheese toast sandwiches and kids will really like it.
