Top 10 Milkshake Recipes for Kids

Do your kids make a lot of fuss while eating fruits? Here is how you can make interesting milkshakes for your kids to include fruits and milk in your child’s diet.

Kids get a bit fussy and choosy when it comes to eating. This fussiness could lead to a lot of deficits in their nutritional intake, given children need a variety of nutritional components that are well-balanced and proportionate with each other to provide for their body, for them to grow holistically. When kids are at a growing age, they are rapidly burning off whatever they consume, they are constantly on the move and hardly sit in one place. For all these activities they need not only energy, but a body that has strong immunity, bones that are strong and muscles that are are flexible and strong. For such development, they require a multitude of vitamins, minerals, fats etc… The primary source for all their body needs is the food they consume. This is why it is very important for kids to have a healthy and well-balanced diet that is a mixture of different components of food categories, that make up their consumption such that provides children with the various nutritional needs in the right quantities. It takes a lot to provide proper nutrition to them at this age. A well-balanced diet includes breads (complex carbs, Indian flatbreads like roti, paratha etc.. fall in this category) and cereal, fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat or alternatives, fats/oils and sweets.

Kids never say “NO” to a good milkshake, and parents should take advantage of this. Milkshakes from outside, and from the store, can be unhealthy for a variety of reasons. We don’t know the quality of milk they may be using, we don’t know where the ingredients were sourced from, we don’t know if the fruits they use for the milkshakes had pesticides etc.. on them when they were grown, and they often use syrups and artificial flavours that have way too much sugar in them, which is ultimately harmful to the health of your child. But milkshakes are very easy to make at home, and you will always be assured of the quality since you know what ingredients were used. Milkshakes are also a great way to get children to eat things they don’t like but are necessary for their health as once blended, children will hardly be able to tell if what they don’t like is in the milkshake. Add fruits, crushed vegetables, different cereals, etc. to the milkshakes to make them more nutritious – so you do not have to worry anymore if your kids skip the fruits and vegetables you serve.

Here are the recipes of the top 10 milkshakes your kids will love to have.

1. Chocolaty Biscuit Milkshake

A chocolaty milkshake is one recipe your kids will surely appreciate, they may even love it so much that it quickly becomes one of their favourites. The recipe is very simple, mix milk, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate syrup in the blender and whip until frothy. Beat the crushed chocolate biscuits in the blended milkshake for a minute. Add more crushed chocolate biscuits for topping. You can also top it with whipped cream and more chocolate sauce. It may seem a little indulgent, and admittedly it does not have the highest health quotient, but it is a good way to get your children to drink milk if they are usually fussy about drinking milk. The chocolate and vanilla ice cream add the flavours children already like to the milk, and since you are not adding sugar more than what is already in the ice cream and biscuits, it isn’t the most unhealthy milkshake.  It is also a much better alternative to the many unhealthy snacks your child may consume if they get hungry or feel like snacking.

2. Strawberry Banana Milk Shake

Strawberry is a very popular flavour amongst children, but unfortunately, it is often used as artificial flavouring. Give your child a taste of the fresh fruit, and the health benefits of it too. Strawberries are rich in Vitamin C and Bananas are rich in Potassium, when paired with the goodness of milk makes a great and nutritious milkshake for your children. Add water to the blender and add banana, sugar, and milk. Blend it for a minute. Then add vanilla essence, a scoop of ice cream to thicken it, and strawberries. Blend for 1-2 minutes more. You can skip the sugar if you want the milkshake to make it healthier since the sugar from the fruits as well as the ice cream is more than enough to sweeten the milkshake. You can add fresh sliced bananas and strawberries as a garnish to make the milkshake richer with iron and other minerals.

3. Marvellous Mango Milkshake

Everyone loves and thoroughly enjoys mangoes when they are in season. Many find mangoes delicious, and children do too. The sweet and soft fleshy part of the mango is a beloved summer treat to many. The best way to cool down in the summer for children, after spending the day making the best of their summer vacations outside, is with a chilled mango milkshake. Prepare mango pulp by cutting the mango and scooping out as much pulp as you can. Add water and mango pulp to the blender. Add little sugar and milk and blend it for 1-2 minutes. Add a few ice cubes.
Mangoes are sweet and have a very distinct flavour. Children and adults enjoy it alike. But children may especially find it refreshing in terms of taste. Mangoes are also loaded with potassium, vitamins, and lots of fibre. Your kids will love to have the marvellous mango milkshake and also get all the nutrients as a bonus too.

4. Blueberry Malted Milkshakes

Blueberry has a very unique flavour and is not overly sweet. Hence, to make this milkshake we need to soften it and sugar to make it sweet. Add sugar and blueberries to the pan and roast it for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Take the pan off the flame and set it aside to cool. Once cool, add in a blender along with frozen yoghurt, milk, malted milk powder, and a few ice cubes. Blend until thick and smooth. Top the milkshake with more blueberries and serve. The malted milk powder provides a nutty flavour that helps bring out the unique flavour of the blueberries well. Your kids may love this milkshake as blueberries have a likeable flavour, but they may love it even before they have it because of the brilliant blue-purple colour the berries give to the milkshake.

5. Watermelon Milkshakes

This is a delicious summer drink your kids will love. You will need cubed frozen watermelon for this. You can cut up the watermelon and freeze it beforehand. The reason the watermelon needs to be frozen beforehand is that watermelon is a very fresh and snappy fruit, it has a watery texture rather than a creamy one. Freezing watermelon cubes helps thicken the milkshake a little. Add milk in the blender along with vanilla extract and sugar to taste; blend it with the watermelon cubes until smooth. You can avoid the sugar if you find your watermelon to be sweet enough.

Watermelons are excellent fruits for the summer. In fact, people may even say it is one of the best fruits to consume during the summer as summers can be hot and draining. You sweat a lot and may get dehydrated. But watermelon is a fruit that keeps you hydrated. It is also rich in fibre, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Potassium.

6. Vanilla Funfetti Milkshake

This is a very fun milkshake that your child will enjoy the looks of as much they will enjoy the flavour of. Funfetti cake is a type of cake that is typically a vanilla cake with white frosting, with very vivid and colourful sprinkles on it, called Funfetti as the colours look like a ‘fun’ burst of confetti. This is the milkshake version of that cake. Blend banana chunks and milk for 3-4 minutes together until the result is thick and creamy. Add the vanilla extract and yoghurt and blend for 1 minute. Pour into a long glass and stir in as many funfetti sprinkles as you like. Kids love this colourful drink, and you can also reserve this milkshake as a treat for special occasions!

7. Malted Milkshake

Another favourite milkshake for kids is the malted milkshake. Malt has a variety of health benefits, as it is rich in fibre, potassium, folate, and vitamin B6. Malt also has a very unique flavour, which is hard to describe. It has a lot of natural sweetness to it, which is a lot healthier than artificial sweeteners that are often marketed to children. Malt also has a natural earthy and nutty flavour to it which complements that natural flavour of milk that children may otherwise shy away from. All in all, a Malted milkshake is a very healthy milkshake for your child, which they will love the taste of and you will be satisfied with the nutritional value of. It is very simple to make as well. You simply need to add instant malted milk powder to the milk in a blender. Add your kids’ favourite ice cream to it and blend till it is smooth.

8. Mint Chip Milkshake

Mint is a very interesting flavour to add to a milkshake, but what makes this particular milkshake recipe even more interesting is that you can sneak in a little spinach in there as well. The recipe for this Mint Chip milkshake is very simple. Mix sliced and frozen banana, baby spinach, peppermint extract, fresh mint leaves, vanilla extract, and a few ice cubes in milk and blend it until smooth. Add chocolate chips until ground into chunky pieces. Top it with fresh mint leaves. You now have a milkshake that is Mint Chip, and a mix of flavours of mint and chocolate chips. This is a milkshake loaded with nutrients from milk, banana and spinach.

9. Whipped Cherry Milkshake

Cherry is another flavour that is popular amongst children but often used as an artificial flavouring with artificial sweetening, neither of which is healthy or advisable for your child. So it is a good idea to use the real fruit to make a milkshake that gives the same flavour but without the unhealthiness. Add milk to a blender and add crushed cherries and ice in it. This is an easy milkshake to prepare – as you just need to blend them until smooth and top it with whipped cream and cherries on it. Your kids will love it and appreciate the natural flavour as opposed to the artificial one, while also getting the nutrients from the milk.

10. Chocolate and Avocado Shake

Avocados are high in monosaturated fats, which actually help lower blood pressure and are good for the heart. They are also an excellent source of potassium, folate and fibre. They make for a very good ingredient for milkshakes as avocados are known for their smooth and creamy texture which improves the milkshake by making it thick and smooth. Mix up the milk, banana, avocado, cocoa powder, Nutella, honey, flax seeds and a few ice cubes until smooth. Kids love this healthy shake with an extra boost of vitamins from flax seeds, avocado, and bananas.

Always keep in mind that you may have to blend it longer until the milkshake looks smooth and fine. You can blend less if you want fruit chunks to remain in the shake. Add less milk to make thicker milkshakes. Prepare milkshakes however your kids prefer and boost their diet. But make sure to cut down sugar and chocolate as much as you can from the milkshakes of your kids. Focus on serving milkshakes loaded with fruits and veggies. Although, your kids will love milkshakes packed with chocolate, biscuits etc; try to serve such drinks occasionally.
