Secondary infertility

Secondary infertility

Twenty percent of women experience a condition called secondary infertility. However, such problems can be avoided if you are careful about your body. Read about what you can do to prevent secondary infertility.

Vidisha had no problems getting pregnant the first time. So she did not think trying for a second child would be an issue. However, even after 8 months of effort, she was still not pregnant. A trip to the doctor resulted in her undergoing a battery of tests. Finally, she was diagnosed with secondary infertility.

Decrease in fertility

It is an accepted medical fact that the chances of female infertility are high after she is 30 years old. In most cases though, decreased fertility does not seriously hamper a woman's chances of getting pregnant, especially if she has been pregnant before. However, some women do experience infertility, termed as secondary infertility. It is more common in women who have had their first child after the age of 30. If you are experiencing this condition, there are some ways to increase your chances of conceiving a child.

Prenatal vitamins

Iron and folic acid can give a boost to your fertility. Prenatal vitamins improve your chances of a successful conception and also prevent your baby from suffering certain birth defects. Essentially, they make up for whatever vitamins you miss out on in your daily diet. Prenatal vitamins are generally available as multivitamin tablets. For better absorption, doctors may prescribe the tablets to be taken along with your meal.

Fertile period

Along with decreasing fertility, the fertile period during the monthly cycle also reduces, as you get older. Each month, the egg released from your ovary remains fertile only for around 12 hours or so. Therefore, finding your fertile period becomes a priority. To do this, you can use an ovulation stick. These are disposable sticks by which you can test your urine to determine if you are ovulating.
If you are taking vitamin C supplements or tablets containing anti-histamines, be aware that these substances dry out cervical secretions. These secretions are responsible for helping the sperm to reach your egg. To combat this problem, apply a lubricant or genital moisturiser to your cervix before engaging in intercourse. Do not apply too much lubricant, as it can block your cervix.

Medical tests

If you are under the age of 35 and have been trying conceiving for a year, it is time for a check-up. For women over 35, the waiting period is six months. Medical tests can determine specific causes affecting your fertility. A basic check-up involves a Pap smear test to check for abnormalities in the uterus and ovaries. You can also do a three-day FSH/estradiol blood test. This test measures the level of FSH or follicle-stimulating hormone, which is responsible for release of eggs from your ovary. High levels of the hormone indicate that your body is working more to stimulate your ovaries.

Less stress

Stress can be a major factor in trying to get pregnant. The stress hormone cortisol interferes with ovulation, leading to decreased fertility. In addition, stress can also cause elevated blood pressure and other conditions, which can create complications in a pregnancy. Research has shown that 77 percent of women who were able to reduce their levels of cortisol succeeded in restoring their ovulation abilities.
Reducing stress can be done in different ways. Generally, reducing stress hormone levels involves a change in diet and exercising. Meditation has also proved effective as a stress buster. Many doctors may also recommend taking a short vacation to rejuvenate your body.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine practice. Acupuncture relieves pain by inserting thin needles at certain points of the body. It can also be used to increase blood flow to the uterus and stimulate production of the necessary hormones. A professionally trained individual must carry out acupuncture for it to be truly effective.
Secondary infertility does not mean you cannot get pregnant. You simply need to be more careful about your body and do what you can to be successful.
