Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My nephew is 10 years old and weighs 45 kgs. He is very overweight, What should his ideal weight be?
Tanisha (Virginia Beach, USA)

A: Your nephew’s height is fine for his age. He should weigh between 30-35kg. Obesity is measured in terms of Body Mass Index (BMI). The ideal BMI for a 10 year old boy should be less than 20, while your nephew’s is above 24. The common causes for obesity are overeating and genetics. If he has hormonal problems he is more likely to be obese. You should see a doctor to have a few blood tests to rule out these problems and also to check his cholesterol levels. If he does not have any problems then you should put him on a healthy diet. If his cholesterol levels are high then he is more likely have high blood pressure and other cardiovascular complications very early in life.

Q: Will obesity lead to diabetes? My son has a 200 count before lunch. Is this a temporary or permanent phenomenon? What precautions are to be taken?
Jagrut (Baroda, India)

A: Obesity as such doesn't lead to diabetes. Diabetes can be associated with obese people as they are resistant to insulin. But obesity can lead to many other problems. You should get your son checked by a doctor. Get his blood, kidney and BP tested. He needs to see a dietician.
