 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I recently used neutrogena face wash for the first time, and within seconds I got allergy/rash all over my face. I used benedryl and the rash or redness is gone now, but it left black spots. Will it go by itself? If not, can you suggest some home treatment or ointment. I never had such allergies with new products. I really appreciate your help in this matter. Thanks, Jyothi

Jyothi (Calcutta, India)

A: Apply lacto calamine lotion to soothe your skin and conceal the dark patches. The next time you try something new, you may want to try it on a small patch of your skin first to prevent such allergic reaction. You could apply cucumber juice to your face to lighten the black spots.

Q: How do you get rid of freackles

Kathryn (Calcutta, L. A. USA )

A: Various lightening creams are available in the market, which claim to lighten freckles. ou could try them to see if they work for you. YWear sunscreen before stepping out, and stay out of the sun in the afternoons, when it is strongest. Wear a cap when you are out in the sun to sheild your face from harsh sunrays. Sun protection is the most effective way to prevent further freckles from forming.

Q: Thanks for answering my previous question. I have lots of black/brown spots on my face. I have been told that they are freckles and they will not go away. Is there any type of foundation I can use to hide this..

H (Mumbai, India)

A: Avoid the sun, or you will develop more freckles. You can apply any foundation that matches your skin colour to conceal freckles. You could also apply a little concealor before applying foundation, if you feel that the foundation is not concealing your freckles enough.

Q: I have had a small round ring shape with a small white patch at the side of my nose, and there appears to have white heads , which is frequent, it looks like open skin pores and at times it is itchy , how can i prevent that and it has left a scarring on my face

Ganga (Mumbai, India)

A: You should show it to a dermatologist as I am not getting a clear picture by your description. If it is a skin infection, it should be seen in person and accordingly treated.

Q: My face is very dull. What should I do. My skin type is normal. My skin does not glow at all. Please help me.

Rinku (Mumbai, India)

A: Skin glows if it is healthy, and if you are healthy. Exercise regularly, go for a brisk walk or a jog at least three times a week. Try and shower with cold water everyday to boost circulation. A great tip for an immediate glow: Place ice cubes in a bowl of water, and splash your face with this ice cold water everyday before stepping out. Also, rub your cheeks with an ice cube for an instant glow.

Q: Are black freckles cancer related and are they something to worry about?

Whit (Mumbai, USA)

A: No not at all. Freckles are of simply no cause for worry. However, large moles, only if they are not even coloured and not round but of a very irregular shape, may be a cause for concern.

Q: Hi, I have a problem. My face is becoming darker day by day. I used to be fair. I am very depressed. Please tell me what I can do.

Saji (Banglore, India)

A: Apply a mixture of nimbu and cucumber juice to your face at night, wash it off in the morning. Drink one glass of nimbu mixed with water as soon as you wake up every morning, to clear your system, and your complexion. (One full nimbu in one glass water, NO sugar) Drink at least ten glasses of water daily. Wash your face twice a day with a face wash suited to your skin type. Apply sunscreen during the day, even if you are indoors.

Q: Hi, i am from south africa. my face has like discolouration around the mouth area only, not dark but makes my face not look even toned. what can i use to remove that patch from around mouth area. also i have like spots throughout my skin, beautician says it is sun spots, but i do not know, what must i do.

Manisha (Banglore, South Africa )

A: If the black spots are freckles, then yes, they are caused by the sun, and there is no natural way to remove them. You could opt for laser treatment. Avoid stepping out in the sun without first applying sunscreen, and avoid stepping out in the afternoon, when the sun is very harsh.

You could try applying a mixture of lemon and glycerin to your face daily. Wash off after ten minutes. Apply cucumber juice to your face at night, and wash off in the morning.

This pigmentation again is probably caused due to sun exposure. Drink at least ten glasses of water daily.

Q: I have a freckle on my upper lip and it is dark and I dont know how to get rid of it. Is there a way to get rid of this dark freckle on my upper lip with out having surgery. Like any household products I could use to get this to go away or at least lighten.

Joey (Banglore, USA)

A: Are you sure it is a freckle, or is it a beauty spot? Either way, a dark spot on the upper lip is considered to be very attractive! In fact, many women go in for permanent tatooing of a beauty spot on their upperlip, while various other women put one on with liquid eyeliner! I'm afraid there is really no way to get rid of a freckle, but you can prevent more from forming by avoiding the sun and by applying sunscreen on a daily basis. Lemon is a natural bleaching agent, so you could try squeezing ten drops of lemon on a cotton ball, and leaving it on the spot for ten minutes.

Q: I have some black marks on the right side of my cheek. How could I get rid of it quickly and easily?

Frigg (Banglore, USA)

A: What are these black marks? Are they freckles or pigmentation? I cannot be of much help without knowing what they are. However, both freckles and pigmentation can be caused due to excessive sun exposure. Avoid stepping out in the afternoons, and make sure you apply sunscreen everyday. Apply a mixture of equal amounts of lemon and honey to your face. Lemon is a natural bleach, so it should help brighten your complexion.

Q: I have got black spots on my nose (they are actually small tiny moles) How to get rid of the small black spot? Those are not black head. Can u suggest how can they be removed by home remedy

Rekha (Mumbai, India)

A: I think you mean freckles. Freckles are very common on the nose. I am afraid there is really no home remedy to remove moles or freckles. You can avoid getting more freckles by not going out in the sun, as freckles are commonly caused due to sun exposure. You do get spot lightening creams in the market, which claim to lighten freckles, so you could try them out to see if they work for you.

Q: I am an 18 yr old girl. I have many freckles on my face as i have to go out daily. I have a fair complexion and it looks bad. Please help me overcome this problem. Please suggest any homemade remedy which will not harm my skin, as my skin is very sensitive.

Annesha (Mumbai, India)

A: Annesha, make it a point to apply sunscreen on your face fifteen minutes before stepping out. Avoid being out in the sun in the afternoon, when it is at its harshest. While in the sun, you could wear a cap. Apply a mixture of lemon and honey (equal amounts) to your face, and wash off after ten minutes. This usually suits all skin types.

Q: I'm 22 but there are very fine lines around my mouth and below my eyes the so-called laughing lines. Also can u please tell me if there is a black dot, which just happened to appear off late on my lips so then what to do.

Lucy (London, U.K)

A: A detailed examination would be required to comment on the solution. Superficial skin peels should help you in the matter of lines. The dot could be a late mole - get it examined for exact diagnosis/treatment.

Q: I am fair. But my skin is dry and now is turning worst. It is becomed dull and full of freckles. So please advice something to restore my normal preety skin?

Kripa (London, India)

A: As your skin is dry, apply a light moisturiser in the morning and leave it on throughout the day. Also, make sure you apply a heavier moisturiser during the night. Pay special attention to the areas around your eyes and mouth. Freckles are usually due to the sun, so avoid venturing out during 12 to 3, when the sun is at it's brightest. If you must, wear a cap, and apply suntan lotion. Wash your face with a face scrub twice a week to scrub off dead skin cells and freshen up your skin.

Q: I have a brown spot on my face which may be a freckle. Please suggest a home remedy. I have oily skin with pimples and marks. My face looks dull. I have facial hair on my upper lip and chin. Would you suggest bleaching, threading or waxing?

Shilpa (London, India)

A: Bleach is a strong chemical and it can dry out your skin, so you should bleach at the most once a fortnight and use a moisturiser regularly. Since you have oily skin, bleaching would not cause too much harm. However, threading is a better option, so instead try threading your upper lip and chin. A dermatologist would be able to give you better advice after seeing your skin and determining if the brown spot is indeed a freckle. The only way to avoid getting freckles is to shield your skin from the sun. Apply a mixture of lime juice and honey to your face, and wash off after ten minutes. For pimples, wash your face with a face wash for oily skin at least twice a day, or cleanse, tone and moisturise your skin twice a day. Use a light moisturiser. Avoid fried foods and soft drinks, and drink at least 10 glasses of water everyday.
