Establish Basic Rules

Studies have shown that kids function much better in an environment that requires them to adhere to certain rules. Talk to your kids about specific rules that govern their safety and motivate them to be self reliant. For example, a safety rule could be “never accept chocolates eatables from any stranger” while a rule for self reliance could be “always pick up your toys and put them away after you have finished playing. Make sure that you discuss with your partner for framing an appropriate set of rules.

Sensitise Children

Sensitise Children
Child sexual abuse is increasingly becoming an inherent danger in the society. Paedophilia has been increasing at an alarming rate and you never know in what form offenders may come guised in. Since you cannot tail every movement of your kids it is a much better idea to sensitise your children to the idea of appropriate and inappropriate touch.
Tell your children that there is certain areas f the body that should never be touched by anybody. Instruct kids on how to maintain distance from strangers and even known people. A sensitized child is always more safer.

Develop Healthy Communication

Develop Healthy Communication
A good communication pattern with your kids will establish a trustful relationship where your kids can feel free in talking to you about any issue. A child who can talk to his or her parent about any problem or untoward incident or odd occurrence will put the parent in a better position to advise or intervene.
Let your child know that you are always there to listen to all kinds of problems. Also express confidence in the abilities of your kids and tell them that they can accomplish basic tasks on their own. The confidence of parents means a lot to kids and they will automatically start becoming more self reliant.

Stay In the Loop

Stay In the Loop
Be involved in each and every aspect of your Childs life especially in the formative years. You should know the kind of friends your kids are making, the places they are frequenting, their school teachers and their equation with people they are interacting with.
A more aware parent is always in a better position to protect their kids and keep them safe. Staying in the loop will mean that you are more aware of the daily activities of your kids and can step in with advice or intervention as required.

Assign Basic Tasks

Assign Basic Tasks
Assign basic age appropriate tasks to your children in order to propagate the quality of becoming self reliant. A self reliant child does not develop overnight and the sooner you start assigning tasks to children, the better. However, always make sure that you properly assess the abilities of your children before assigning them work. For example, you can ask your 2 year old to keep the ball back in the basket after playing while a 5 year old can be given the task of washing fruits and vegetables. An older kid can be given the responsibility of making own bed or packing own school bag.
Slowly increase the difficulty level of tasks and appreciate kids whenever they fulfil the same successfully. This way you can teach your kids to become self reliant and more efficient.
