Ways to Build Lasting Self-Esteem in Kids

Do you want your child to become great? Here are some ways to build lasting self-esteem in kids.

It is very important to build children’s self-esteem even if they are doing well.  Some kids are born with confidence while some feel scared of various situations and problems. Build your child’s self esteem by following the below tips:-

Education

Education is a great leveller and it is a must. Never neglect your child’s education for other things. Education should be number one priority always. A child who can speak good English and understand things easily, naturally have more self-esteem than someone who cannot read or write. Hence, education is a must for boosting self esteem and confidence of the child whether it is a girl child or boy.

Equality and Impartiality

Do not show favouritism to children. Be neutral during fights without supporting one more than the other. Treat all siblings equally. Do not be partial at home also. For example, pampering one child more and neglecting the other is not good. You should show equal amount of love and affection to both. There will come a time when they grow up and there are chances that one may always hold a grudge against the one who was loved more by Mom and Dad. It may hurt the one who was treated as less important and reduced self-esteem.

Don’t Yell at Them

Yelling at kids is not going to help in any way. Whether they are good or bad, try speaking to them in an affectionate tone without screaming. Yelling can damage their self-esteem making them feel resentful towards you. They may not listen to you in future also. Hence, set an example by making them feel loved and special as if they are the apple of your eyes. Build their confidence by regularly staying in touch with them even after they grow up.

Talk to Them about Their Problems

Sometimes kids may also have some problems. Hence you should regularly talk to them and try to find out what’s going on in their life. Is there anyone at school who is causing them problems? You may never know what’s going on unless and until you talk to them and find out. They may not have people to understand them and so you should take the first step and show that you care. Remember there is no substitute for children after all you gave birth to them and they are yours.

Improve Their Physical Health and Encourage Extra-Curricular Activities

Children who are healthy will be more confident than others. Encourage them to participate in sports, singing, dramas, etc. It will keep them active, healthy and busy. Money is not everything in life so teach your kids to enjoy life by being a good role model. Go on holidays and take them to beaches, theme parks, etc once in a while. Life is not permanent.

You cannot expect self-esteem and confidence to build in a day. Even the great Bollywood star – Hrithik Roshan used to stammer. He could not talk to people properly. However, he overcame his problem and has become a successful actor and star. Thus, even celebrities may not be perfect. Teach your child to take it easy without worrying or becoming anxious. You too should prepare him or her for the best in life by focusing more on strengths and positive qualities.
