Dhanteras is major shopping time for the whole family as it first day of Diwali. We buy gold or silver coins for worshipping and also light diyas everywhere to ward off the darkness.

we are a business family. For us this puja is very important. We perform Dhanteras puja by worshipping "bahi-khatas" (accounts books)and new acount books are started this day.

The first day of Diwali is called Dhanteras and at sunset,we all family members offer puja and light diyas to Yama, the Lord of Death. This is for protection from an untimely death. On Dhanteras, we buy silver, gold or at least a utensil for home as buying "Dhan" (asset) in some form of metal brings luck and prosperity
