Skin Problems - Bites, Blisters and Burns

Children are quite prone to injuries while playing. This cannot be avoided but we can be careful. Read about what should you do when you suffer from skin problems like bites, blisters and burns.

Children are always running, hopping and jumping here and there. They handle things very carelessly. Therefore, problems like bites, blisters and burns are very common in them. If such problems occur, you must follow right remedies. Here is what you can do if your child is suffering from skin problems like bites, blisters or burns.

Bites

Your child may be bitten by a dog, cat or another child. If this happens, call the doctor immediately. Wash the wound with soap and water for about 15 minutes. Try to stem the bleeding, if any, and cover the wound with a sterile bandage. Do not apply antiseptic. The doctor may need to give your child a booster tetanus shot or antibiotics if there is an infection. Special treatment may be required if your child is bitten by a dog, cat or any other animal.

Insect bites are also very common in children. Usually, they are bitten by insects like mosquitoes, ants, bees, bugs, beetles etc. You children may show mild reactions to these insect bites which may fade away in sometime. However, in rare cases some children may develop severe allergic reaction which is known as anaphylaxis. In case if you observe any severe reaction, you must report to your doctor immediately.

How to prevent insect bites in children?

Here are some things which you can do to prevent insect bites in your child.
  • Keep your house and the surrounding areas clean as insects are mainly attracted to dirt and filth.

  • Use safe insect repellent creams which are recommended by your doctor.

  • Make your children wear full sleeve shirts and full pants in order to prevent insect bites.

  • Use insect screens for your windows.

  • Avoid taking your children near areas where water is stagnated or garbage is accumulated.

Blisters

When any part of the body has been chafed, rubbed or burned, the skin forms a blister as a protective measure. Do not prick a blister on any account. The blister will subside naturally and the skin will become dry and hard.

Children may also get blisters due to insect bites, coming in contact with some foreign material, allergic reaction to certain foods, bacterial or viral infections like chicken pox etc. Therefore, if the blisters do not go away naturally with a day, it is a must to get them examined by a doctor.

Tips for preventing blisters

Have a quick look at the tips for preventing blisters in children.
  • Avoid foods that cause blisters due to allergic reaction in your child.

  • Do not make your child wear tight-fitting clothes or shoes.

  • Avoid using products that trigger allergic reaction in your child.

  • Encourage your child to drink plenty of water.

  • Trim your child’s finger nails regularly so that harm will not be caused if your child scratches her skin.

  • Make your child wear appropriate clothes when she has to go out in sun.

Burns

In the case of a minor burn, simply pour cold water over it; the colder the better.  Do not apply any ointment and never burst a blister.  The best treatment is to cover the injury with clean gauze or a fresh cotton handkerchief.  In the case of serious burns, you should immediately take her to a hospital emergency room for proper treatment.

Tips for preventing burns

It is very important to be extremely careful while cooking when your children are around. When you finish cooking, keep the hot pans and vessels out of the reach of your children. Make sure that you keep things like lighters, matchboxes, lighted diyas, candles etc; out of your children’s reach. Educate your children about how they can keep themselves safe from fire and protect themselves from burns.

Keeping children safe is very important. Taking small precautions can prevent big dangers. Therefore, it is a must to take right preventive measures for protecting children from the dangers that are always lurking around.
