Keeping Children Healthy During Summers

Do you want your child to be healthy during summers? Here are a few ways to keep your child fit, strong and healthy regardless of the summer heat.

As the summer heat shows no signs of receding, there is still some time left for the showers of monsoon to begin. The sun is shining bright and people everywhere are worried about their kids being affected because of the heat. Reading stories about dehydration or sun-strokes can scare many parents. Hence, parents should make efforts to ensure that their children stay healthy despite the summer heat.

Following are a few tips:

Keep Your Children Hydrated

Dehydration is the common cause for summer illnesses in children. Therefore, it is necessary to keep them hydrated to prevent such illnesses in them. Including summer drinks in diet is a great way to prevent dehydration in children. Encourage them to drink natural and healthy drinks like lemonade, fresh fruit juices, lassi, buttermilk, coconut water etc; to help them stay hydrated, healthy and fit during summers.

Packed Lunches and Summer Precautions

It is better to pack your own lunch instead of buying food from out when you go for picnics or outings. Following safety tips during summer is very important. Food cooked outside may often be spoilt due to bacteria. Summer heat may cause your lunches at home to become spoilt hence many items need to be refrigerated. The high temperatures in summer leads to foods becoming bad easily hence food should be kept inside the fridge. Foods which have been out for more than two hours should be checked before eating. Hence, try to keep food cool and take the necessary safety precautions.

Involve Them in Social Activities

Summer is the time when children have vacations, hence try to ensure that kids are busy with various activities. Keep them social and reduce time spent in front of the screen. You can enrol your son or daughter in various summer camps which are being conducted. Try to encourage kids to play more games outside and before you know they have already had good amount of exercise running here and there. It is better to stay active even when school is not going on. Hence, keep your child involved in various activities which they can enjoy.

Importance of Sun-Screen

It is very important to apply sun-screen during summer whenever your kids step outside the house. Exposing kids to the sunlight can lead to skin damage because the sunlight contains harmful ultraviolet rays. However the early morning sun is very good. Generally, it is advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight after twelve noon. Sunlight is a good source of Vitamin D. You can buy a good sun screen lotion in your local shop if your son or daughter is playing outside in the afternoons when it is hot. Children may not pay attention and will be busy with games hence it is your duty to take care.

Gardening

In the earlier times, people often cooked their own meals with vegetables growing in the garden. Foods grown in the personal garden are safe and free from harmful chemicals, etc. Teach your kids the importance of planting trees and the present them with wonderful opportunities to do some gardening. If you have a large farm in your village, you can see how exciting it is for kids to grow their own veggies. It is good to plant trees around because there is always fresh air. Get your kids interested in nature and see how they enjoy watching flowers and foods grow. Gardening is a great summer activity for kids.

Hence, try to ensure that your kids have a great time during summer holidays. Teach them to take care of their health without overexposure to sun. Let them wear clothes which are loose and light-coloured. Take care of their diet as well and ensure that they are getting adequate nutrition along with plenty of drinking water. Summer is the time to let children play to their heart’s content without falling sick. Hence, tell your kids to stay healthy this summer if they want to enjoy and have fun.

Playing for a long time in hot sun can cause summer illnesses in children so care must be taken that children spend time indoors when it is too hot outside.
