Dealing with Diarrhoea in Toddlers

Dealing with Diarrhoea in Toddlers
A toddler has to cope with a lot of discomfort if he or she is coping with diarrhoea. Here is how you can help your toddler cope with diarrhoea.

Diarrhoea is probably one of the most common diseases among all of us, especially among kids and it usually happens due to our poor eating habits. However, although we do not pay much attention to diarrhoea often, it is true that it can get serious at times as well. So, there are certain things you need to keep in mind in order to avoid your kids getting affected with diarrhoea, especially on what they should eat and what not!

What is Diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea, as per common definition, is the loosening of stools in the patient’s body along with increased frequency. With watery stools, the patient also becomes too weak. He gets dehydrated and hence, it is highly recommended for the kids to remain hydrated during diarrhoea as often it gets fatal as well if the patient does not pay attention to his or her condition. With sore and dry mouth, diarrhoea also has common symptoms like infrequent urination, absence of tears, concentrated urine, etc.

Common Symptoms of Diarrhoea

  • Dry and sticky mouth
  • Lack of energy and dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Dark yellow urine
  • Lose motions

What Should You Feed Your Child?

In order to keep your little one hydrated properly, you must increase the frequency of fluids in his or her diet along with non-spicy and proper healthy food. Also, one loose stool does not mean that he or she is affected with diarrhoea yet and hence, without showing him or her to the doctor, do not change the diet.

For Frequent and Watery Diarrhoea:

  • You must make your kid drink a lot of water. Just be calm and feed him or her water. You can feed him or her oral rehydration solutions as well.
  • While suffering from diarrhoea, your kid should get healthy table food. It is easy to digest starchy foods and hence you can go for whole wheat bread, cereals, whole grain pasta, rice, mashed potatoes, etc.

For Mild Diarrhoea

  • Foods containing more starch should be introduced in your kid’s daily diet. This will help him or her to digest well.
  • Encourage your child to drink more water and include fluids in his or her diet. Avoid carbonated drinks.
  • Must avoid food products which help in loosening the stools.

How to Take Care of Your Kid When He or She Suffers From Diarrhoea?

There is no such effective medicine for diarrhoea and only extra care is needed. So, how to take extra care of your little one?

Prevention is Better than Cure

You must teach your kid to wash hands properly before eating. Also, if your little one is a toddler, make sure that you wash your hands properly before and after changing diapers.

Add Probiotics in Diet

Probiotics contain healthy bacteria and hence they can replace the unhealthy ones from your kid’s body. Yogurt is the most common form of probiotic and you should make your kid eat it most often.

See a Doctor

You must not take your child’s diarrhoea lightly and should take him or her to a doctor as soon as he or she starts producing loosened and watery stools.
Diarrhoea is mainly caused due to the viral infection in the lining of the gastroenteritis. It is also often caused by bacteria and parasites. If your kid likes fruit juices way too much and loves to have the sugarcane juice everyday while coming back from the school, which is also not hygienic most of the times, he or she is likely to get diarrhoea. So, if your kid’s diet is not proper and you are not keeping an eye on what he or she eats, diarrhoea can be a real trouble.
