Everything You Need to Know About the Cholera Vaccination

Everything You Need to Know About the Cholera Vaccination
Vaccinating children according to the schedule prescribed by a paediatrician is a must. Here are things that you need to know about the cholera vaccination.
One of the most serious diseases is cholera which is even fatal. Although, very rare in the developed countries, cholera is quite common in the poor countries and places where living conditions are not up-to-the-mark. For all the kids, people who need to travel to cholera-prone areas should always opt for this vaccine.

What is Cholera?

  • It is an acute diarrhoeal illness caused by the bacteria named enterotoxin subunit-A of Vibrio Cholerae.
  • It is a water-borne infection which mostly attracts through ingestion of the faecal contaminated water.
  • The incubation period of this disease is around 2-5 days. Although in some of the cases it might just take a few hours.
  • This disease is very much prone in the areas where the sanitation condition is poor. It has a mortality rate of 30-50%.
  • Cholera is an epidemic and any place after a natural disaster or war is common.
  • It can spread from one person to another through faeco-oral route.

Few Things about Cholera Vaccine

  • The cholera vaccine is not licensed to be used as an infection control device for managing cholera or preventing the traveller’s diarrhoea.
  • This vaccine should not be thought of as an alternative to any standard hygiene defence, which is the most prominent way to prevent cholera or any other food or water borne disease.
  • Immunisation is required for: the ones working as an aid in the disaster relief camps and the refugee camps, travellers who are going to a remote place with poor sanitary conditions.

Effectiveness of Cholera Vaccine

The vaccination protects against the V. Cholerae serotype O1. Hence, it is ineffective for the prevention of the infection with the non-O1 injuries such as the V. Cholerae serotype called O1. The oral cholera vaccinations are safe and they even offer real good protection against the disease.
The oral vaccination which is currently available kills the bacteria and prevents almost 50%-60% of the episodes of this disease.

The Schedule of the Vaccination

You must follow the vaccination schedule as prescribe by your doctor. Take a quick look at the general vaccination schedule for cholera.
Primary vaccine:
  • Adults and children above the age of 6 years are advised two doses of the oral cholera vaccines and should be given at an interval of 1-6 weeks.
  • Children between the age group of 2-6 years advised three vaccine doses necessarily but each of the doses should be given at an interval of 1-6 weeks.
  • There should not be more than 6 weeks of interval between the vaccine doses. One should always complete the immunisation.
Boosters:
  • Adults and Children above 6 years: A booster might be given after two years of the primary course. If there is a gap of more than 2 years, the vaccination should start again with the primary course under doctor’s guidance.
  • Children Between 2-6 Years: A booster vaccine dose should be given after every six months under a doctor’s guidance.

Who Should Not Get Cholera Vaccine?

The oral cholera vaccinations should not be given to:
  • The persons who have serious anaphylactic reactions for the oral cholera vaccine.
  • Anybody with the anaphylactic reaction for any of the components of the cholera vaccine.
  • The pregnant women and the one who are breast-feeding their newly borns should never get the cholera vaccine. In such cases doctor may suggest safer alternatives.

Side Effects

Generally, this cholera vaccination is well-tolerated by the receivers, however, there are some side effects which have been invented over the years.
  • Diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, cramps and abdominal pains which are rare in only 1 in 100 people receiving the vaccine.
  • Rash, arthralgia, paraesthesia and other flu-like syndromes can also be seen in some cases.
Cholera vaccination, although invented late, is a must for all the children. Along with the other vaccine shots which should be given to the children after attaining the right age, cholera vaccine is also vital. Follow the immunisation schedule prescribed by your doctor for immunizing children against cholera.

What is the importance of cholera vaccination? At what age should children receive cholera vaccination shots? When is it not advisable to take cholera vaccination? Discuss here.
