MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)

MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)

MMR vaccine is administered to immunize your child against measles, mumps and rubella. This is a very important vaccine because contracting any of these diseases can lead to serious health complications.
MMR vaccine is one of the important vaccinations that are given to children. It can protect children against dreadful disease like measles, mumps and rubella. Your doctor will prescribe a schedule for this vaccination along with the other vaccinations. You must follow this schedule and fix appointment with your doctor when your baby is due for the vaccination. Let us now take a detailed look at the importance of MMR vaccination.

What is the MMR vaccine, and why is it so important?

This vaccine is administered to immunize your child against measles, mumps and rubella. This is a very important vaccine because contracting any of these diseases can lead to serious health complications.
Measles
Measles can result in serious, sometimes fatal complications.
Mumps
Mumps is not a serious disease if contracted while you are a child. However, it can have serious consequences like sterility or deafness in adulthood.
Rubella
You may not realize that you have contracted Rubella or German measles. The symptoms are so mild that they are almost non-existent. It is necessary to immunize your child against Rubella because it can cause birth defects in the foetus of a pregnant woman who is infected. Immunization aims at safeguarding the future foetuses of little girls and reduces the risk of pregnant mothers possibly being infected by their children.

What kind of reactions will my child get?

The baby will usually develop reactions to the vaccine only a week or two after the shot has been given. These reactions are generally very mild and may include a rash, slight fever, swelling of the neck or salivary glands, and aching joints.

To whom should this vaccine not be given?

It is dangerous to administer the vaccine to anyone who is severely allergic to eggs or to an antibiotic called neomycin.

What is the schedule of MMR vaccine in India?

The first dose of MMR vaccine is given to a child between 12 to 18 months of his or her age. The second dose is given to a child between the ages of 4 to 6 years. This schedule of giving MMR vaccination is prescribed by Indian Academy of Paediatrics.

What if the MMR vaccination due date is missed?

If you miss the vaccination due date for some reason, it is wise to consult a doctor. Your doctor will reschedule the vaccination date. Do not delay to consult your doctor in case if the vaccination due date is missed.

Can MMR vaccination be given if the child is sick?

If your child is coping with illnesses like flu, fever or any other severe infection, your doctor may consider not vaccinating your child and rescheduling it on some other day. Your doctor may reschedule the vaccination when your child recovers completely from the illness. So, it is important to notify your doctor if your child is ill when his or her vaccination is scheduled. Although, vaccinations are postponed when the child is ill, doctor may not consider postponing the vaccination when the child is coping with any mild illnesses like mild cold. You must let your doctor decide if the vaccination should be postponed.
Not only MMR vaccination but also other vaccines should be given to children on time. If the vaccinations are delayed or missed, parent must consult a doctor and reschedule it immediately.
