Verbal dyspraxia is subtype of dyslexia a learning disorder. Know about its symptoms and how to help child with verbal dyspraxia.

Are you aware of the term verbal dyspraxia? Most of the parents are not aware of it and fail to help their child. Verbal dyspraxia is one of the subtypes of dyslexia disorder in children. This problem is associated with the difficulty to form words while speaking. It does not mean that there is problem with child's brain or other organs responsible for speaking function. It is as a result of cluttered messages being sent and received by brain. Read on and know more about verbal dyspraxia disorder.

What is verbal dyspraxia?

Verbal dyspraxia disorder is also known developmental dyspraxia or apraxia of speech. This disorder does not involve any kind of oral muscle or cognitive disorder. In this disorder it is difficult for child to communicate under pressure. The flow of communication is smooth when it is automatic. Children facing this disorder require thinking even for repeating the same word several times.
It is to be noted that verbal dyspraxia is not same as stuttering or stammering. In most of the cases this disorder is difficult to detect. According to experts it can be caused due to improper neuron development.

Symptoms of verbal dyspraxia

Here are some of the symptoms observed in verbal dyspraxic children. These symptoms may be ignored many a time by parents as they seem to be normal. Noticing the symptoms is important for early diagnosis and treatment.
  • Difficulty in communication
  • Absence or very little babbling during early years of infancy
  • Better understanding of language
  • Difficulty for others to understand them
  • Taking breaks while speaking
  • Speaking very slowly
  • Difficulty to speak in depression or excitement

Helping children with verbal dyspraxia

A little patience and positive attitude is necessary to help child to cope with verbal dyspraxia. It is essential to make child and others aware about this disorder, it makes easier for child to cope with this disorder. Here are some tips which will make helping children with verbal dyspraxia easier.
  • Use sign languages to make child comfortable to communicate. It is also helpful to develop the language of the child. Using charts and pictures while communicating reduces stress on the child, it enables proper co-ordination of brain and speech organs
  • Take help of speech therapy to bring about remarkable improvement in verbally dyspraxic children. You should consult speech therapist as soon as you notice symptoms. A speech therapist will help you with suitable measures to treat the child
  • Try breath controlling techniques like pranayama which helps child to cope with pressure while talking
  • Avoid disturbing or interrupting child while talking, give him or her time to speak a complete sentence
  • Keep track of the improvement in child and encourage him or her to do better
  • Try to maintain calm and bliss at home to help child avoid frustration. Avoid spanking and yelling on small mistakes of child, it can disturb child mentally
Constant effort with patience can bring about valuable development in child. Parent's support can prove to be a milestone in child's life. You should always take expert's help to reduce your confusion regarding disorder. As you will understand your child's problem correctly, you will be in a better position to help him or her. Have faith that nothing is impossible in this world, the obstacles will vanish automatically.

my son is 3 1/2 yrs old and has verbal dyspraxia. He started speech therapy 6 months ago and he's improving each day.I feel very happy.

A Speech Pathologist will be able to assess whether a child is experiencing verbal dyspraxia or is possibly having other difficulties with their speech and language development.There are several ways to assist with dyspraxia depending on the severity of the disorder.

Dyspraxia is a neurological disorder effecting the production of speech. It be acquired through damage to the brain by trauma/accident, stroke, or illness. Dyspraxia may also occur developmentally in the absence of brain injury from no obvious cause.
