An 11-Year-Old Pre-Teen's Development (10 Years, 12-Month-Old)

Many girls get periods by this age and boys also undergo a lot of sexual developments by this time. To know more about her growth and developments in 11 years old children, read on.
This is the time when children go through plenty of physical and sexual developments with changes in hormones. The adolescent period marks beginning of puberty. Your child is no longer a kid and is getting into adulthood. Some form of parental advice is necessary at this stage, say the experts.
Puberty in children depends on quite a number of factors; some of them are gender, nutrition and genes. The hormonal actions result in plenty of bodily changes now.
Ovaries in girls start producing oestrogen along with the other feminine hormones. Testicles in boys increase formation of testosterone. Hormones secrete adrenal glands that increase body odour, oil secretion, and development of pubic hair and so on. You may have to spray antiperspirant or deodorant on your child now.

Puberty and Girls

Girls experience development of breasts now. Some may also get their first period at this age. Here are some of the bodily changes that girls go through before their first period.
  • Increase in size of the hips.
  • Increase in height.
  • Whitish or clear vaginal secretions
  • Hair in legs, around vagina and the armpits
In the beginning you may find her cycles irregular. There may be a gap of 2 months in the other cycle. It is important to keep track of the cycles and see if it is falling into a pattern. Keeping a track shall also help you predict the next cycle.
You may find her irritated, whining or going through mood swings or complain of a bloated feeling before periods. She may also develop some premenstrual symptoms as she continues to grow.
Puberty shall be over by the time she is 17 years old. Girls generally do not grow in height after this. Although she becomes physically mature, her emotional and educational maturity shall continue.

Puberty Timeline for Girls

Girls are known to experience fast growth around this time. Breasts develop completely by the time she is 18.
Her legs, arm pit and pubic hair shall start growing at this time and they shall take the adult patterns by around 14 years.
Menstruation generally starts 2 years after development of the breasts and growth of pubic hair. While menstruation may start at this time, it may also wait till she turns 13 years. You should not be worried in either of the cases.

Puberty and Boys

Enlargement of the testicles are known to be the main sign of puberty among boys. Some of the physical changes that boys shall experience now are as follows:
  • He shall appear very tall.
  • His shoulder width shall increase.
  • He shall grow hair under his arms, pubic region and face.
  • He shall experience growth of the penis, testes and scrotum.
  • He shall have wet dreams or ejaculations at night.
His testes are producing sperms that are stored in his epididymis. The sperm is at times released to create space for the new ones. This process or nocturnal emissions happen automatically. This also results from sexual intercourse or masturbation. However, parents need to be informed it is part of the development of puberty.

Puberty Timeline for Boys

Puberty in boys does not start suddenly like menstruation in girls. While you may not experience your son having wet dreams at this age, it may also start when he is around 13. Changes in his voice can be experienced with enlargement of his penis. If you have any questions or concerns, you may always visit your doctor.
Make sure your child comes to you in case he or she has any questions. You must keep all channels of communications open.

How to help girls deal with puberty? What is the role of fathers in helping boys deal with adolescence? How to aid the growth and development of kids who are 11 years old? Discuss here.
