Pre-Teen's Growth and Development (9 Years, 4-Month-Old)

Apart from being physically stronger, your kid is now capable of thinking critically as well. You can see plenty of changes in her growth and behaviour now. Read more about the developments that are expected in a 9 years, 4-month-old child.
Your 9 years, 4-month-old child shall appear lot more curious about the world around her and shall keep you busy with all her questions. Be prepared for questions on war, why they happen and why the sky looks blue. She shall now be capable of thinking more critically and weigh her different options.
If you were thinking of introducing her to different research tools, this is probably the best time. You can show her the news in magazines and news papers too. You can slowly introduce her to books apart from those taught in schools and those fairy tales she had been reading so far. A boy of this age would be naturally inquisitive about cars, gadgets and their mechanisms and a girl would be interested in dolls. You can show simple illustrations of how a car engine looks like and how machines work to a male child and show how to groom a doll to a female child.
Here we shall take a look at some other developments you can expect this month. Take a look:

Social Development of the Kid

You can take her to the library with you and let her take a look at the wealth of information there. She can look at books on different topics and choose something that interests her.
She has much better and longer attention spans now. She shall now be able to focus on things for more than an hour now. She shall develop her liking for an activity and get passionate about it. Help her explore more topics she likes and conduct research on them. Apart from reading, you can also encourage her to participate in different sports like football, baseball, basketball or cricket. She can research about the different players and know how they contributed to their teams. Pursuing her favourite sport will make her more focussed and diligent.
She will love playing with her friends in groups and shall also appear more cooperative than before. She will love to work on a particular topic or subject and become more skilled in it. You must offer all the encouragements and support to help her develop new interests. Help her to keep going especially when she feels frustrated.

Writing and Reading Skills

She shall now be able to write as well as read with ease. She shall be able to express her feelings using complex vocabulary and concepts.
She shall now show interest in reading non fictions and fictions that shall include biographies, suspense thrillers, and historical fictions and so on.
She shall now be able to write different types of essays, reports, historical fiction and so on. She can also conduct research on a given topic from the library.

Math and Number Skills

Mathematics shall get all the more complicated now. She shall be able to handle multiplications and divisions; she shall also learn geometry and fractions. This is the time she shall be introduced to algebra. She shall learn to use charts and graphs with data and work on the word problems. She shall be able to apply logical and analytical thinking skills now.
With time she shall also learn about the different angles and measure them. She shall also learn to collect, organize and share presentations and data reports.
However, you need to remember developmental milestones are general guidelines that most of the kids of this age are known to follow. You should not be worried if she appears slow in some areas and surpasses others in some other sectors. Every child is unique and grows and develops at this own pace. In case you are worried, you can talk about your concerns to your doctor. He shall help you find the right solution.
Good luck mommies and happy parenting!
