Newborn's Development (1-Month-Old)

Your newborn’s development in 2nd month will fill you with love and amazement. Find the developments that you can explore in the 2nd month of your baby’s development.

Congratulations! The 1st month of your newborn has passed successfully! This is the time when you can slowly sense a growing personality in her. You are slowly familiarising yourself with her likes and dislikes. You are now more aware of the triggers that make her uncomfortable.

Newborn’s Growth and Development in 2nd Month

Here are explained some more developments that you can explore in the 2nd month of her birth:
  • Your little one is developing more control over herself now. She is now comparatively more capable of holding her head while resting on her tummy.
  • She has now developed a stronger sucking reflex now. You may also find her thumb sucking, which is a self soothing method.
  • She is yet to develop her coordination while playing with toys. However, you can now hang colourful objects in front of her and see her staring at it for long.
  • While she is yet to develop better sleep patterns, you need to be little more patient. Give her some time to develop a sleep pattern and you shall too be able to sleep through the night.
  • Make sure she is sleeping on her back and there are not many pillows around. Sleeping on the back shall ensure she is not at the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. So, while she is sleeping, it is better to keep away all the soft toys, mattresses and pillows.
  • Her eyesight has developed more than before and she can see things which are around 18 inches away. Thus, it is important that you keep things close to her eyesight. You may find her following movement of different objects close to her.
  • Her hearing ability has also improved and she shall love listening to your voice.
  • She is still communicating with you through her cries. However, by now you are aware of most of the concerns that might be bothering her. It is important you respond to her coos, cries and gurgles. Smiling back at her may also soothe her at times.
  • Talking to your baby at this age is extremely important. Even if she is not talking, she shall respond to your voice. This shall also help her learn to communicate faster.

Some Helpful Tips for Moms

While motherhood is no doubt highly rewarding, it can be extremely nerve wracking as well. Thus, it is advisable that you look for help whenever you need. This shall also leave some time for yourself and you will not feel overwhelmed with all the responsibilities around you. You may also get in touch with your doctor in case you feel concerned and need any help.
  • Moms are busier than before today and this leaves them with very little time with their babies. You need to make sure there is someone to take care of her and assist her moving around.
  • Rolling and eventually crawling are essential activities that your baby needs for proper development and growth.
  • It is a bad idea to let your baby sleep in bouncy seats, car seats or in the carriers all the time.
  • Your baby is developing touch sensations now. Thus, it is very important that you touch her. It is a way of comforting her and showing your love.
  • Playing soft music shall be another way of soothing her. Babies can also be calmed by "white noises" like the sounds of a vacuum cleaner, washing machine or a chimney.
You are her mother and know her the best. However, do not feel guilty if you are not able to understand everything she needs and what she is trying to tell you. You shall gain the perfection with time.

What developments are expected in a 1-month-old baby? How can mothers help a baby to communicate better? How can mother understand the cues of her baby? Discuss here.
