How to Prevent Hearing Loss?

Can we prevent hearing loss with so much noise all around us? Loud noise is the most common cause for loss of hearing. Hearing power should not be taken for granted. Some basic care if taken can prevent hearing loss in the future. A routine check up with an ENT will ensure good health of the organ of hearing thus preventing loss o0f hearing. Read on some preventive measures for hearing loss.

With so much of noise around, we are constantly exposed to a wide array of noises in our regular lives. This is found to be one of the primary causes leading to hearing loss. Hearing loss is also said to be the loss of intimacy. This is because with the loss of hearing, we lose touch with the immediate background sounds that are closer to us in our environment. Then again when there is a conversation going on, the individual keeps politely nodding without getting a clear hang of what the talk is all about and this leads to alienation. Therefore it is important that we all take concrete measures to prevent hearing loss so that we are saved from the predicament of a difficult life.

Check How You Spend Your Ears

Loud music can be enjoyable at times but it is very important to understand that persistent listening to loud music can damage our hearing faculty. We need to be extremely careful about this as the most common reason for the gradual loss of hearing is attributed to the habit of listening to loud music. So indulge in loud music very sparingly. Try not to get addicted to it and never make it a regular habit.

Check your Hearing Levels by a Professional

It might sound boring to spend a few hours at the ENT or at the clinic of the audiologist but nothing pays off better than this preventive measure. You should go for checkups at regular intervals and this is a perfect way to gauge the present status of your ears. You will thereby know when it is time to consult your doctor and moreover, can take effective preventive measures in terms of behavioral changes and medications, according to your specific condition, before it is too late. Remember, just as your eyes are precious, so are your hearing ability. It marks and defines your sensitivity.

Resort to Noise Cancelling Headphones or Sound Isolating Devices

Never put up the volume of the music player just to compete with the background noise. Invest in devices that will help you enjoy the music without damaging your ears or causing disturbance in your environment.

Quit Smoking Immediately

Amongst a lot of other harmful effects, smoking can potentially rob you of your hearing powers. There are numerous studies that stand testimony to the fact that regular smokers stand a 1.69% greater risk of having a hearing loss compared to those who are non-smokers. This can be explained by the fact that the smoke you inhale actually travels into the ears through the Eustachian tubes.

Do Not Overlook Your Genes

We all have certain genetic predispositions. If there is any instance of hearing loss in the family, it is all the more essential that you are particularly careful with your ears. These genetic cases are one of the best indicators on whether you stand a risk of hearing loss or not.

Learn to Turn Down Too

As we walk or drive and listen to music, we have this tendency of notching up the volume be a few degrees. There are various reasons that cause this behavior: one is to outdo the background noise, the other is to give an adrenalin rush. Try to lower the volume, and you will discover that the music or the song sounds just as sweet. Take care of your habits and you will enjoy your hearing for a longer period to come.
