Baby's Development from Infant to Toddler

Baby

The transition from an infant to a toddler is a milestone in your child’s life. Learn about the changes that take place when your baby develops into a toddler from an infant.

The transition from an infant to a toddler might theoretically require a year’s time, but in reality the transition takes place so fast that you hardly get an opportunity to notice, how time has passed! This transition is evidently a developmental one where the primary changes being progressed from the presymbolic to the symbolic stage. Given below are the three principle changes during the infant to toddler journey:

There is an Enhanced Mobility

A number of physical, emotional and cognitive changes occur as the baby passes from the infant to the toddler stage and the changes occur pretty fast. It all starts with crawling, progresses to walking and then running, the running implies running into almost everything on the way! A sense of extreme curiosity and interest in all that is taking place around him rises. The toddler now wants to explore and get involved in each and everything that is in his surroundings.

This is the learning phase as well. As he is curious, he begins to explore, learn and become creative in the process too. There is an associative developmental aspect here. In the course of curioucity, there happens to be a separation of the child’s physical and the emotional self. It raises the concern of the physical safety of the kid, not to undermine the emotional, as the case may be. As such disciplinary issues begin to arise at this point where the parents try to put a leash on the curiosity drive of the kid, leading to struggles and escalated concerns.

There is a Dawn of Self-Awareness

Awareness dawns with the physiological and neurobiological changes occurring in the brains of the little one. They begin to become aware of the sense that describes the feeling of ‘me’.

You can try out a simple experiment. Put a red dot on the nose of a baby who is under 18 months, and show a mirror to him. You will not notice anything much in his behaviour. Conduct the same experiment with a toddler, who is 19-20 months of age. You will notice that the baby will self-consciously touches his nose, that is, he is aware that something has been done to her nose. This is the dawn of self-awareness. This is a time when the toddle also begins to express his likes and dislikes.

Language Development Occurs

With the development of language the parent-child relationship gets a new flourish. He learns to communicate verbally, share his thoughts, express his likes and dislikes in words and tries to express his understanding of the whole world before you. This is an important stage as language and its expression is expected to go according to the set norms. With the toddler being at the initial stage of development of language, his expressive ability with words may not be very clear. Parents play a huge role in helping the toddler to effectively develop his language. Do not encourage lisping by talking to the toddler in a similar lisping manner even if you find it cute. This will hamper his understanding that words ought to be spoken in a clear manner. Seek the advice of a counselor or speech therapist if you find any abnormalities in the smooth development of language in the toddler.

Finally, the point to remember is that allow your baby to develop at his own pace. Observe his behaviour closely and if you notice any abnormality, speak to the pediatrician. Just remember that do not act in haste or panic at the slightest deviation from your idea of the baby’s development graph.
