The Second Year

The Second Year

In the second year your baby progresses from standing straight to climbing stairs. The second year is marked with remarkable growth and developments in your baby. Read to learn about the developmental milestones that your baby may attain in the second year.
Your baby is now transforming into a toddler. Her baby looks will start disappearing now. There will be improvement in her activities. Her growth will continue at a steady rate. Let us take a look at your baby’s growth between 13 to 24 months.

13 to 15 months

The baby will be able to stand unaided and will try to take one or two steps without help. This will be one of the most joyful moments for you to watch your baby taking her first steps. During this phase, your baby’s focus will be on learning to walk independently and as such the speech development may not be at its peak. She will speak a few words but she will be concentrating on learning to maintain the balance while walking.

15 to 18 months

The baby will be able to raise herself, walk with feet wide apart and elbows high. She may not require support while walking by now. This is the time when she will be keener to explore things around her. You need to be very careful during this time as she may try to play and experiment with everything that is around her.

18 to 20 months

The baby will be able to walk in a steadier manner and her arms will drop to her sides. She will also develop the ability to climb stairs. She will be hopping and jumping everywhere. By this time she is half way through her second year. You can start planning for her second birthday celebration. She will now be completely aware of her surroundings. If you ask something she will be able to point it out.

21 to 24 months

At this stage, the baby can maintain her balance and can retrieve dropped objects. When your child is about the complete two years of her age, she will master innumerable skills. Playing with ball, kicking it, throwing the ball, the ability to recognise her toys, recognising picture are some of the skills that she will be able to master.

How to aid baby’s development during the second year?

Here is what you can do to aid your baby’s development during the second year of her growth.
  • Toys can play a very important role in helping your baby learn new things. Get age appropriate toys for her.
  • Talking to your baby is a must for boosting her speaking and language skills.
  • Reading to her is an important activity that you can carry out for helping her develop interest in reading.
  • You can get picture books, alphabet books and number books for her. Reading these books with her will help in the development of her academic skills.
  • It is also very important for parents to play with her. Playing games with her can also help to stimulate her brain.
  • As she will be busy in exploring a lot of things, it is must to childproof your home and keep her safe.
  • You can also carry out interesting activities like singing and dancing with her.
Parents have to play a very important role in boosting the growth and development of a child. Spending quality time with them is very important. Activities like talking, singing, dancing, playing can prove extremely useful in stimulating the growth and development of a child. One more thing you need to keep in mind that each child is unique and may grow at her own pace. Your child may not attain all the growth milestones as mentioned above. If you think that your child is facing any difficulty in attaining milestones, you must consult your doctor.

your milestone chart cabn be very distressing to some parents. please add that whre walking is concerned, it can be even sixteen months before baby takes his/her first step and atill be normal.

i second the opinion expressed
by radhika. please stress the
fact that not all babies reach
all the milestones at the same
time. you must put in a special
reference for pre-mature babies
whose milestone are in general
quite different from normal
babies.

the statement that babies should be able to walk well by the tenth month is false. anytime before 18 months is considered normal.

your site says, "by the tenth month your baby should be able to walk well"

i have seen many babies and most of them walk independently from 11 to 14 months. i have never seen a 10 month old walk without holding onto something.
