Career in Jewellery Design

Building career in jewellery design is one of the alternative career options. Career in jewellery design is basically pursued by the individuals who belong to the family having traditional jewellery business. However, there are lots of people who do not have such type of family background but opt for this type of career. Read on to know more about career in jewellery design.


Jewellery designing is a creative art and calls for great visualization and technical expertise. Here are certain aspects that one must be aware of when s/he decides to take up jewellery designing as a
career:


Types of jewellery

You primarily need to know the type of jewellery that you would be designing. This means that you must know your field well, whether it is the rings section, or earrings, brooches, necklaces, bracelets, etc.


Jewellery Materials

Jewellery can be made from a whole lot of materials apart from metals. They are like various types of gemstones, beads, synthetic elements, paper, shells, and natural elements like wood, dry flowers, twigs and bark or trees, etc. even there are a wide variety of metals apart from the usual gold, silver, platinum, titanium, brass, copper, etc.


Equipment and Tools

Jewellery designing requires specific equipments and tools and a designer must be aware of the latest innovative tool and where it is available in the market. If you are serious about your designing career, you also need to effectively maintain an insider’s list pertaining to contact information for the suppliers that are usually recommended by the established and professional jewellery designers. Likewise, s/he must also be aware of the jewellery designing workshops, college courses and the various certificate programs.


Teach Yourself

You need to have a clear step-by-step idea of jewellery designing, including an explanation of the design process. This includes the initial development idea for the jewellery. It must also ensure that your design is wearable. You must know how to use a computer aided design (CAD) while sketching your design. You must appropriately choose your materials and have an extensive knowledge regarding patterns and molds in jewellery design. You also need to make a sample or prototype of your design. You need to additionally have a clear idea about the usage of jewellery making techniques like filing, soldering, wire-work, saw-piercing, etc.


Crafts people

They are the artisans who would breathe life into your designs. So while making a career out of this design industry, you must have first hand information about the craftspeople and companies who will make the jewellery designed by you.

Then when you look to get yourself hired, you should know where to gather information regarding the types of positions like – design assistant, head designer, bench work or assembly. Make an effective package of your portfolio and photographs of your design work. A jewellery designer must also know how to make a great impression while giving her/his presentations.

If you plan to start your own designing business, you need to know how to make it as inexpensive as possible. A definite business plan must be in place that would begin with the determination of the startup costs and where to obtain the future financing from. There should also be an appropriate name for your business.

You need to have your resources on insurance, taxes, incorporations, product sales in place. Have a fixed workplace or rent a studio. You must have an effective network of employees and contractors who would be entrusted with the assembly of your designs. Last but not the least; you must know how to determine the price of the pieces designed by you!
