I think the best way to overcome shyness is by encouraging the kid to open up. Kids try to follow the parents so if you as a parent become extrovert, then kids also will do the same by following you. Encouraging socializing also is a great way of overcoming shyness. Mingling with people makes shy people confident.

My daughter was extremely shy and i had a hard time making her confident and extrovert. i used to take her with me and encourage her to mix with friends. i used to be part of her games so that she could open up. before going to any new place, i used to prepare her in advance and talk about what to expect and what to do there. i am lucky that i handled my daughter well and she became outgoing.

Some kids are born shy. I think it is an inherent trait and not much can be done. At the most we can help the kid to open up a bit so that he feels at ease. If parents are shy, then kids will also be shy. Some kids are shy due to some reasons such as past incidents.
