another thing most people do not realise that the avataar of Kali being prayed to on this night is Mahakali. She is benign and not the destroyer. she is the one we pray to for health and strength.

Subject:  Better understanding
This article cleared up many of my misconceptions. I had heard so many stories about Kali that I did not know which one was right. I also did not know the reason why she is always depicted with her tongue out. After reading this article, I have a better understanding of all these things.

Subject:  Goddess Kali
The goddess Kali is an important figure in Hindu mythology. It is strange how we people are so ignorant about our own religion. I have lost count of how many times I have come across people who associate Kali only with vengeance. I also remember reading somewhere about a band of dacoits who killed their victims in the name of the goddess.

Subject:  Only Bengal?
I understand the significance of this pooja but I have one query though. Why is the Kali pooja performed only in Bengal? What is it that makes this event significant to only a particular region. And if they perform Kali pooja during Diwali, when is the Lakshmi pooja performed?

Lakshmi Pooja is celebrated on the full moon night after Dassera - Kojagiri Purnima. i guess most bengalis pray to Kali as a benign goddess. as durga is the goddess they normally pray to - all her avataars are prayed to equally. mostly other communities associate kali with death. i am speculating. but i hope it makes sense.
