Due Date Club July 2008:Ultrasounds - good or bad ?
2008-05-28
Name: Suni....

Hi All,

I am really confused on whether ultrasounds are good or bad or rather do they affect the baby ?

The docs always advise on a U/S for any possible problem and elders and family always keep saying that too many Ultrasounds are not good !!

What is the actual advisable no. of ultrasounds that one should get done during the complete 9 month term and at what intervals ? and any medical reasons related to no getting it done....if anyone knows....please share....

Thanks.....

Hi Suni
therz nothin to worry abt the no. of USG ...it all depends on ur diagnosed symptoms as well as the babyz health...as for me i have undergone 4 ultrasounds in last 4 months,,, n once even i was wondrin whthr its safe or not.but agn it varies frm person to person ,, hormonal changes in the body, general body chemistry etc.. one of my frnz has had ultrasound evry 15 days in hr prgnancy n she has a hlthy baby now....
so its only to rule out any doubts of possible probs. n to ensure wellbng of mom n baby...
hope ur worries have decresed a lil...
tk care

hi suni..

ultrasounds are absolutely safe.. it operates on the basis of soundwaves which are bounced off the baby and the images are projected on the screen.. the baby is not affected in any way whatsoever...

typically a person needs 3-4 scans in a 9month period.. but if there are doubts regarding the development of the baby then the expectant mother will be sent for more scans to ensure that everything is normal..

generally elderly people don' t have knowledge about latest technological developments and tend to give the wrong advise at times.. with ultrasound technology it is better to have the scans done as and when your doctor advises you to get them done coz the doctor wants to make sure your baby is safe and all the conditions required for it' s normal development are stable.. so please don' t get perturbed with the number of scans you potentially may have to go for.. it is better to be on the safer side and know exactly what is happening with your baby.. with ultrasound you maybe able to prevent problems

hope this helps
