Kids & Food:food my child can carry to school.
2007-07-01
Name: vaijayanti my son is 2 yrs 9 months. he is in nursery, going to school since 18th june. his school is from 9 am to 1 pm. he leaves house at 8.15 am, reaches school at 8.50, has his lunch break at 11.30 am for 15 min. leaves school at 1 pm, but since the auto rickshaw wala picks up 3 other kids from another school at 1.30, and they are dropped home as their residences are earlier in the route, my son reaches his creche at 2 pm. from there i pick him up at 5.45 pm to 6 pm.
whatever i cook for him, turns cold by the time he eats it, and he hates eating cold chapatis, dal, rice or sabzi. i tried insulated tiffin boxes too, but the food gets spoilt by 2 pm(i prepare it by 7-7.30 am).
pls suggest some recipes which he would love to eat, can eat quickly, and are nutritious too. the recipes should taste good even when cold.
i would be grateful to all who send me their recipes, ideas.
regards,
vaijayanti

Hi Vaijayanthi,
Mother would take care in terms of food because it is major task for them. Some kids would oppose food and some will eat nicely.Try to put food for him hot box and then you observe what would happen.

Hi Vijayanthi,
So can you say what would be the better solution you have preferred then only it would be the better you share because it is clearly understood that your child will not eat food when it is cold then try any other option for it.

Hello Vaijayanti,
You can give him snacks to school because children would feel hungry at any time and you need to put some thing and they will take when ever they feel hungry and teachers would feed them also.So no need to get tensed also.

Subject:  nutritious laddoos and cornflakes chivda
I am giving you all worried moms nutritious laddoo recipes which you children will eat with no fuss and with their own hands !!! atleast my daughter who is 22 months old eats.

3 spoons of ragi flour
2 spoons of whole wheat flour
1 tps of olive oil ( good for health when eaten raw)
2 tps each of cashew nut powder, almond powder and 4 tbps groundnut powder
3tps of cornflakes and oats powder
2 tps of pure ghee
grated or crushed jaggery as per your sweet taste

pls try to put jaggery then sugar as jaggery is good for health.

you can also add some more things as you feel like raisins, small small pieces of dry dates, some more dry fruits powder.

all this should be fine powder so as children should not find lumps while eating

mix it well and you can roll them into small laddoos and not big ones so that the children will hold them in their hands. if they r not consistent to be rolled in laddoos add more ghee and jaggery . they will form into laddoos. and give 1 in morning and 1 in evening for healthy n nutritious snacks.

pls tl me how you liked my recipe.

Some children to dont like corn flakes in milk can eat them as snacks- chivda. i found this recipes on one site n my daughter loves it.
and it is made in 2 mnts time. as i m working mom i still get time to make it. so its easy .

1 packet of plain ordinary corn flakes
5 tps coconut oil or any oil
little turmeric, salt, sugar, chilli powder
8 curry leaves, little khuskhus-poppy seeds, little til seeds, little jeera, and mustard seeds.
little hing.

heat oil and put all the above ingredients except sugar and corn flakes 1 by 1. after all r fried then put corn flakes and fry them fr just a while. they will turn nice and crispy. at the end put little sugar or no sugar as it is optional. i dont put sugar.

then serve ur children with evening snacks or as a part of tiffin for playgroup and nursery children. they will not eat other stuff like rice or chapati in tiffin but these corn flakes they will eat willingly and as they are prepared at home you will be relived of its cleanliness and nutrition.

pls inform how u liked this recipe.

i hav not yet experianced the situation u are in but was very moved by ur letter...may be u can try the following
*some fruit like apple/ banana that can be eated readily
*try fried idlies (no need of cutney or samber)
* fresh sandwich with butter, cucumber and tomato if he likes (use whole wheat bread) - can use paneer as well
* try fried rice with vegetable raita (cucumber raita/boondi raita/onion raita)
* can also try stuffed parantha - gobhi/paneer

also u can enquire if his school/crech has a microwave/OTG where teacher can reheat the tiffen and you can pack the tiffen in the suitable container.
