Feeding:Custard Powder??

Hi Hetal

Sanah is fine & hope so for neerja too.

Few more queries for u again

Is custard made from custard powder good in routine diet of a baby ?Cause i read in one of ur mails ... custard that u talk about is totally a home made thing but we get here in India... different flavours of custard powders (Brown & Polsen and weikfield) that i use for making Sanah's fruit custard.
It has Corn flour & salt as its only ingredients.
One more thing... that how r viral & Bacterial infections identified?U said in one of ur mails to me that the doctor shud not be prescribing antibiotics for a viral infections>>> but in India doctor will tell us normally that its a viral infection (usually throat)& will also prescribe antibiotic. As a mother I m really hesitant about giving these medicines to my children... then ultimately i have to resort to Homeopathy.
Am I right in not taking antibiotics?

I m really confused..
Please answer

Thanx in anticipation

Anu

Hi Anu,
Different custard powders are available and you need to have some clarity on which custard powder you are talking about.Because custard would generate heat in the body.

Hi Anu,
Generally doctors would prescribe directly anti biotics for kids for any infections. It is not so good for them.Try to use some other alternative solutions for kids.Because they may lose their immunity.

Hi Anu,
As you said doctors would prescribe anti biotics for kids for any problem and i think by giving continuous anti biotics it would effect the immunity system of the body of the children also.I hope doctor would not prescribe such medicines also.

as far its a trusted brand,,,its ok to use custard pwder ! if your baby is above 1 year, their digestives are mature enough to handle readymades,,,just make sure you dont offer as a main meal of the day,,,nething readymade that is as a part of meal is good, but should not be the only serving offered ! so you ddecide..once a while everything is fine !
cornflour and salt is used in making alot of dishes by mexicans, latin americans and they offer varieties of dishes made of these to their kids/babies above 9months,,so its a trusted practise by many cultures n countries,,hence i will not comment on it,,if your baby is fine with it and has not shown ne digestion prob or stomach upset, no worries,,,if thats the only ingrednts used !!!!!

now abt antibiotics for virals or bacterials:::::
i think it was in your post itself when I talkd abt antibiotics and virals or bacterial nfctions...
if you read the same post carefully, you will also notice a sentence that there are viral infections that MAY result to bacterial infections in later stage of sickness.

In practice by many drs around the world,, antibiotics are often used to treat some viral infections because differentiating between bacterial and viral infections is difficult during first signs/symptoms of sickness.
it totally depends on the severity of the viral infections and what part of body is infected...
however, the baby or patients with bacterial infections have symptoms that are like more acutely ill, often displaying shaking, chills and extremely high fever thats continuous or in intervals, irregular body temperatures like one point he gets extremly cold and the next 5mins he sweats and he gets very warm and hot,,i.e.fever,,, and often these kids white blood cell counts go high.sometimes there are other signs like skin rashes or other severe conditions like change in colour of eyes, skin or stools.however, for virals, most related are mild or high fevers, colds, coughs, recurring fevers/cold/coughs or just stmach infectns.hwver its difficult to judge when the fever is the only reason,,as to its actual cause.

drs checks the baby with the clinical history, examination and laboratory tests to distinguish between viral and bacterial infections only when he doubts something serious,,,and thats the only way one can be sure about the cause of the sickness,,,
for kids and toddlers, taking a blood test or stool samples for first signs of cold, or common allerges, lil fevers, common coughs,,,,is not always recommended..and these things are very common until they are 5 years of age,,there is alot going on with them,,,things like cold, coughs, fevers could be sign of just teething or if recurring could be first symptms that might result to other serious,,health conditions...
body parts like throat, ear, eyes, stomach and sinuses are the main ones wherein most of the virals result in bacterials...although it depnds on recovery of the child and severity...how n all, will write it later.

this if happens prolongs the sickness of the patient, the result might be out of control...the reason is in viral infection itself body bcomes weak in first few days,,,,so continuing with other infection becomes difficult to deal for a toddler or baby,,which further may lead to er situations or cases of emergency medincess, thats y its practised to give antibiotics in most cases wherein viral infections are more prone to turn into bacterial infection,,,

your role as a mother is :
1.trust your dr and if ne doubt ask him alternative medicine like over the counter, regular shop medicine,, if any, would help your baby recover without a need of antibiotic.
2.ne extra care regarding diet, lmost drs recommend a good vitamin c diet, like orange juice,,its said to improve recovery immune of the body and help in good recovery.also having alot of clear liquid diet is highly recommended to flush out infections from baby systems..
3. if at all, your dr has prescrbed one, gv your antibiotic as instructed by your dr and always better to ask your pharmacist as well for ne side effects,,so that you are aware of it,incase the medication or precribed note by dr doesnt mention these details..nthing wrong to ask your dr about the possible side effects and whether or not wht will be consequences if the things go worst.
4. some medicnation of antibiotics are adviced only upto the symptoms of the sickness is seen like results are expected in first 3-4 days itself or else patient is expected to be seen by dr immediately,,, and others you have to give complete the dosage even after baby has shown recovery,,,so ask your dr, which one you have to follow !!!!
5.certain antibiotics may interact with food or other medications or may make you more sensitive to sunlight.ask your dr if ne specific diet is to be followed with these medications, like with some medications, iron enriched foods should be avoided, with others giving milk products or wheat/protein products is not recommnded,,some ntbiotics show unwanted reactions to sour foods, spicy foods or just bakery foods,,so ask your dr what type of diet is to be followed for ne ntibiotic or medicine is prescribed.and also get the confirmation if you can give whatever other medicines like gripe water, mylicon,ne other tonic or colicaid or other regular otc or ne supplemtns,,,,that you might be giving to your toddlers that you have been giving for routine probs...
6.never share the antibiotic with other family members or with siblings even when the same symptoms have appeared,,,and always check the expiry dates for each medicine given,,if at all the drs have given their own tablets, then ask how to store to ensure the safety handling and storing...some medications require refrigeration and some none.,,also ask your dr about the number of times refilling is required for ne medications given ! and how long your dr expects your baby to recover....all these will help you give antibiotics or ne medicine giving good results without ne other complications and will be safe for your baby as well.

in one standpoint you are right in not taking or giving antibiotics when it comes to normal cold, seasonal allergies or ordinary fever by teething or seasonal changes/climatic conditions/weather occurances like rain etc or baby overtired during travels nd gets fever or cold,,
but if you are one of those people who believe that people can “get used to” an antibiotic, and that antibiotics spoil the apetite,,,thn its not the fact but instead bacteria can develop resistance to an antibiotic. The more antibiotics are used, the more resistance is evident. Some bacteria are virtually resistant to all known antibiotics...and still researches are going on to get something that can cure the symptom permanently,,,,,thats y at first time your dr may give you one antibiotic and again if the same symptom occurs he might give you the other,,after trying the first medicine for a couple days....

but at the same time, let your dr be the best person to decide whether or not your baby needs one,,because you defintly dont want your child to enter into a loop that continues with series of infections !!! so go by your mother gut feel and then decide whats right thing to do at right time,,,dpending on your baby health conditions.

so,,now its upto you to decide that your thinking is right or not.....you be the best judge, you know what is the time your baby generally takes to recover or how far its doing good or not,,if the time prolongs, always doubt and ask your dr,,and a visit to dr is better than assuming things when it comes to babies health...

crux of the matter :: until 5 years of age,,its worth making false visits if it ensures safety nd good/sound health,,thn letting your child suffer,,,after that, you can try all sorts of alternative medicines, home remedies,,as by then your baby will develop a strong immune to fight against ne odds,,that might occur due to failure of ne traditional remedies,.,,,

hope this clears your doubts,,you have a wonderful weekend !
take care.
