Due Date Club July 2008:Indian/American baby

Hi there. I am new to this forum so forgive me if this subject has already been broached.

I am married to an Indian man and we are expecting our first child. My heritage is that of a typical American, a mix of European descent and a little Native American Indian thrown in. I was just wondering if any of you can tell me what to expect our baby to look like? Meaning...with Indian babies does the color of their eyes or skin tend to change? Are they typically born with hair or bald? Really just any little thing you can think of would be appreciated.

Also my husband and I am Muslim. If anyone can shed any light on typical Muslim-Indian cultural traditions regarding birth and infancy I would be very thankful.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Jeanna in Knoxville

Dear Jeanna,

Hi, well being a Muslim n following Islam der are a few things that we follow for the new born babies...

These are called the rights of a New Born Baby is Islam....

1. Sayin the Adhaan in the ears of the new born.
2. Tasmiyah (Naming the baby) It is sunnah to name the baby within 7 days of its birth.
3. Aqeeqah & shaving the head of the baby.
4. Khitan - Circumcision

These are a few thngs dat come to my mind rite now..... wen i come across more... will surely write in to u.... Tkcr

A´ salaamu alaikum. Thanks for the advice. Can you tell me if the heads of girls are shaved as well?

Oh, btw, we had considered Saba as a name for the baby but too many of my family had problems pronouncing it. :-)

Wasalaam,

Jeanna

hi ....

m an indian, staying in mumbai. good to hear that you are expecting a new member in your house. take care.

no one can tell u how your baby will look - eyes, complexsion, colour, hair .... its the genes which the baby gets. u cant control or predict it.

as per indian tradition, as soon as u hear the family members see the new baby, we make him taste a drop of honey !!! i know honey is not advised by doctors.... but we still do.

also once he is few days old, we select an alphabet from a pandit & select his name and make his kundali.

we also apply kajal on his forehead daily after bath or black thread on wrist/neck to protect him for evil eye.

these are beliefs .... thats only if u choose to follow.

a child is GODs gift & HE takes care of him.
