Crying & Colic:diet for 4 month old
2006-10-14
Name: anu my daughter is 4 months old. She drinks formula milk. for the past 1 month i am giving her cerlac. she eats well and she is comfortable with the diet. Now i have started giving little bit of vegetables along with the cerelac, like carrot, potato(only a piece at a time abuot 1 cm long) also i tried mashed apples(same quantity)
the problem is she digests them well, but in the evenings she is very restless, crying, not sleeping, etc. i think may be beacause of the vegtables i add for lunch. i want to know what is the correct stage to start vegetables. for my first child i started after 3 months and he was very comfortable, but this girl finds difficult, what should i do?

Quite a lot similar betn us ... My daughter is turned 4m on 7th oct. Also, this is my second baby :)

I m a working person. After experiences from first child, i have been discussing closely with a good doc on feeding related things. I also saught suggestions from Hetal on this message board.
Now it is going v fine for me.
This is what i do -

- i started daal-ka-pani when baby was 3 1/2 m.
- morning-evening, i try to give her breastmilk. If i m too tired, i give her formula.
- i introduce 1 new thing to the baby every week.
- start with light things like daal and rice, fresh fruit juice like mausmi/orange/apple
- when i start a new thing, i gradually increase the amount and concentration over the week. For eg - day 1: 1 ounce mausmi juice (1/2 ounce juice + 1/2 ounce water). If day 1 goes fine, Day2: more juice+water.
Next week, i start apple juice. By that time, baby was adjusted to mausmi juice well.
When i started apple juice, i did not stop mausmi juice.
- daal/rice : start with daal-pani or rice-pani by cooking them like we normally do. Add little salt and little bit ghee so that it tastes good.
Over the week, gradually increase the concentration of daal by mashing and adding the daal itself. It took me 2 weeks to take the baby to daal instead of daal-pani and 1 week for rice. Now i make daal like normal one, strain water, grind daal in a small mixie to make smooth paste, add the strained water, add salt ghee and give with bowl-spoon.

I started with yello-washed-moong dal.
Arhar and other daals are heavier.

My doc insists on doign away with bottle. Thanks to her, this is how my baby's schedule is now -
mornings - my feed
lunch around 11 am after bath - apple and mausmi juice
next feed - bottle/i go home and feed the baby
evening around 6 pm - daal or rice or a mix of both
after that - my feed (or i give formula if i come home late or am tired)

I was also interested in cerelac, but when i read on its pack that starting age shd be 6m, i dint.

- in 2-3 days, i m starting with apple-pie as suggested by Hetal. Boil the apple (dont remove the skin) in pressure cooker, mash it and give

- my baby cannot take semi solid things yet. I hv to keep it quite liquid so i add boiled and cooled water

- later, i will start with banana. I found mixie best to churn things for baby and have bought a very small mixie. I will give her mashed banana added to my milk or formula milk.
I will try this for 1 week.
By this time, i am sassuming she will be close to 4 and 3/4 months.
Once she gets adjusted to banana, i will start adding less dairy milk (and with water) in banana so that she gets adjusted to dairy milk.

- i am not planning to start vegetables this month. I will start it when she is 5m.
This is what doc suggetsed about vegetables.
Start with easy-to-digest veg. Steam the veg in pressure cooker with water. Give that soup to baby - or - Add that water to the daal that u give her.
Gradually increase qualtity (i increase it on a daily basis), so that one day you give her one feed as soup.
Gradually then, mash the same veg and add it to soup.
Add v little ghee + salt to taste!

- i also have plans to start giving rice kheer, suji kheer. Of course, once she gets adjusted to dairy milk (when i give her banana), this will be easier.

- my doc suggested giving sugar-based things later, and started with daal/rice first. This is because sugar encourages bacteria in mouth. (Breastmilk contains some anti-bacterial elements so this is what i feed her before night sleep)

- another idea.
I have bought some big plant-pots (gamla) and i am growing green veggies like spinach, methi, coriander, pudina.
They will be grow up by the time baby is ready for it.
You anyway dont need much quantity for the baby and u can give chemical free and fresh greens to the baby.
Moreover, this can be used for the elder kid too!

long mail
but i hop this helps

our babies are same aged, lets keep in touch and sharing views :)

thank you for the effort you have taken to type a very informative reply. for my daughter i am giving morning nice raagi malt made into solid form. then by 10.00 after bath milk and lunch she takes cerelac with some additives, monday dhal paani, tuesday carrots, wednesday - tomatoes, thursday - potato, friday - banana, saturday - green moong dhal water sunday boiled apple,

evening 3.30 - 4.00 milk and by 7-8 p.m dinner cerelac plain rice and milk.

in the night she wakes up once or twice and takes milk and she sleeps.

this was the same diet which i followed for my son. this diet will go on for another cople of months and after that rice will come for lunch. with all the vegetables added as i mentioned before. raagi/ mashed idlis int he morning, rice and vegetables in the lunch and cerelac for dinner and by 10 months start giving all types of foods, slowly introduce tiffin items.

babies will be comfortable to digest vegetables and fruits from 5month onwards. thats what my dr told me. my baby was very fussy when i started carrots with raagi and cereal.
after 5months, he was fine taking vegetables.potato is not a starting solid. carrots, peas and thn its beans or sweet potato. your baby is having gas because of potato.

hope this helps you.

thank you for your reply, tm. she is restless only on those days which i give her vegetables. if i stop for for 2 days she is alright and if i start giving vegetables the problem starts again. so for the timebeing i have stopped. planning to give veggies next month when she is 5 months.

tm, one more question, do you have any idea about how to keep babies comfortable during car drives. mine is very restless and i am scared of taking her out. she wants to sleep only in her cradle not anywhere else , so in the car she doesn't want to sleep and she cries a lot.

hai!!
i dont think vegetables can be an issue for a 4 month old.u can better stop giving her them for 2or 3 days and watch if she is ok.if she is still restless then she mustbe bored.take her for a relaxing walk..babies get bored very easily..
regards
tm !!
