Crying & Colic:Q for Hetal-Crying while feeding & passing motion

Hi Hetal,
I was browsing through the queries posted here and found that you have been giving great inputs and answering all queries regarding newborns and infants.
I am a first time mom and my son is 6 weeks old. He has started crying while passing motions and sometimes during feeding also. Is this common for babies of this age or is this something I should be concerned about. Also he has discharge from both his eyes from the time of birth. His doc adviced cipron drops thrice a day for 3 days. The discharge clears when using the drops , but comes again after 4 or 5 days of stopping it. Should I be taking him to an opthalmologist. Please elt me know. Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers

Thanks a lot for the inputs. I spoke to his doc and for the discharge in his eyes he has referred us to a pediatric opthalmologist just as Hetal suggested. I have taken an appointment for tomorrow. The discharge is primarily there when he wakes up from sleep and is dried. I am cleaning his eyes with cotton balls, separte ones for each eyes when ever he wakes up. Hope it is only a blocked tear duct as Hetal said.
Regarding the crying during motions the doc asked me to give colicaid when he cries and it did help yesterday. Should see if it will continuw. I will be meeting the doc on Sunday for his vaccinations and will check with him then also. Thanks again for all your inputs and will update you all after the doc appointments.

Hetal replied. i would like to agree with anna about baby crying during motions,,6 weeks baby is not worth a long wait when it comes to cryingg while passing stools..so please consult your dr.
check on your diet, if at all you have taken something like hard lentils, raw fresh vegies or excess diet or ne heavy food, this could be just the reason for your baby stomach upset...
its better to get it confirmed by your dr in this case,,,whenever crying is involved during bowels,,its not a good sign,,unless your baby is colicky or is suffering from gastric reflux...like in seema case, her baby was suffering from severe infant colic which does not last longer than 4months,,and his dr was fine with that discomfort during bowels,,but that was confirmed by your dr,,its the diff issue that her being case of colic i was able to judge it rightly,,,but your case may be different...so dont go by individual experiences like if someone baby cried because of this reason, my baby is also doing the same because of that reason,,,thats the diff issue that could be the reason but what if there is some other reason ???
when it comes to babies,,each baby is differnt and so is his symptoms and problems...so please consult your dr and i would love to hear update from you,if pssible...
take care,
Hetal replied. passing motions has nothing to do with discharge in eyes..about dischage in eyes,,,it depends on how the discharge looks and feels,,it is difficult to check it virtually.if the medicine has not proved to be effective by the time your doc has adviced or by 4-5days of its dosage, its expected by you to see your dr again.
if your baby has white matter collecting in the inner corner of the eye, it may be from a blocked tear duct. and if i were you i will follow up with my dr.
i want you to watch for below :
1.when you move nething/toy,does he follow ? does he look at it.
gnerally a newborn is expected to see objects best that are eight to 12 inches from their nose,,,so keep the toy or finger accordingly and see if he follows,,be slow in doing that,,newborns take a while to understand that they have to follow :)
2. whenever he gets this discharge, does he seem to be uncomfortable.
3. for what time duration, is this discharge coming out,,,
4. does the eye get red by ne chance,,if so notice that.
5.baby seems to be sleeping more than often/regular times,,which is abit early to predict though you have some idea,,,and seems to feel uninterested in feeds and check on weight,,,,
6.ne temperature or reddenned eyes, cloudy discharge that makes eye very sticky....all note it down and call dr immediately.
check all this and note it down and take it to your dr..
most infants get eye irritations due to antibiotic ointment used/given at the birth,,but thats the small amt of yellowish discharge from your baby eyes and usually is expected to clearup by 24 hours..and if at all this continues, it means your baby got the infection...
so i want you to take care of the following :
1. dont use the same washcloth that you use on face and then on body or viz a versa..for both use seperate wash cloths.
2. avoid using ne scented cremes or wipes,,or ne perfumes around your baby.
3.like anna said never touch your baby eyes,,,but instead dip the cotton ball in cool water (not cold,or even warm,,just room temperature,),,and give it a good squeeze and then make like a wipe/damp,,and then clean your baby eyes with a wipe. use this for one time use only..dont use it again for the other eye and never use it again,,throw the water and the used cotton balls.use the cool water that has been previously boiled,,do this as often as needed,,
also giving a gentle pressure on outside the nose may help to clear the pooled tears in the upper part of blocked duct and may also help the tear duct to develop...
if the discharge is sticky and is thinner, clear and noncrusty,,it does mean that your baby might have a cold, an allergy to pollen, or dried-out eyes from gusty winds(keep the windows closed around baby at the same time ensure fresh air ventilation or circulation,,..
otherwise, the plain white eye mucus or discharge is most common among infants and it keeps happening until baby tear ducts are opened totally..about 1 in 5 newborn babies have tear ducts that are not fully developed and it happens in both or one eyes..some babies recover with this in weeks and some takes several months..if it remains blocked by 12months of age, your baby may be referred to an eye specialist to 'probe'' the tear duct...
so right now,its not serious..i see it as a typical case in which tear production in newborn babies, and it may take a week or so to start,,so first you might have noticed watery eyes and your baby is usually not bothered.sometimes after the sleep the affected eye or both the eyes gets sticky and then you may have to wipe it away all that glueeee material.
alarming situations for this is eye becomes inflamed, red or looks too puffy and sticky that your baby is not able to open it,,baby rubs the eye and seems to be in pain whnever the eye is wiped with cotton ball, and baby doesnt like light at all or seems to close his eyes whenever a bright day light is in the house,,or he turns away his head from light all the time his face is exposed to normal day light,,all the tea duct thats in the corner of the eye looks bright red,,,,,
in these above conditions rush him to dr immediately//it means er...
also note that babies with such type of common prob of lacromal or tear system,,is more prone to conjuctivities/pink eye..
thats y you are given these drops to prevent ne severe conditions,,,
still if makes you feel better, nothin wrong, take him to Pediatric opthalmologist !!!!
before you take him to ped optha,,make sure to check with your dr as to how often you can give those drops(upto 3 days is the dosage for one time occurance and not multiple occurances),,so ask how often you can continue givgin these drops and also ask,,whether or not he would like to see the baby first...make it clear !
about the medicine, most patients have been comfortable with it,,and there are no side effects reported,,however, use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a new fungal eye infection. so not use it for longer than prescribed..thats y i told you to ask your dr..other than, normal allergic reactions include rash, itching, swelling dizziness, trouble breathing,,bad taste in mouth may be seen,,,which are normal..
good luck to you and you have a wonderful weekend.
Seema replied. ana, there was no need for you to comment on time it takes for someone to reply.if the message is in her name and she feels the urgency, she has replied on weekends too.
Subha,i will not be of much help to you but i think there are different ways babies cry. if you think that your son is crying coz of pain or you hear shrill cry, call your doc immediately.
my baby was colicky and used to cry at every motion. and my prev doc was okay with dat.i was not convinced and took the second opinion.but eventually my baby was fine after 3month, just like hetal had explained me in her first post.so I am sure you will get a satisfying reply from her.
in most of hetal posts she has mentioned that if any medicine is not showing results in 5 days, contact your doc immediately for change in medicine or take a second opinion.
hope your baby gets well soon.
ana replied. if hetal takes time (more than a day) to reply back, i wd say consult the doc
- the baby surely is in trouble that why cries during motions and feed.
i hope u r watching your diet too and your breastmilk is not heavy for the baby.
- my baby also had discharge from eyes.
I also used the same medicine (my doct suggested same) and baby was cured in 2 days.
Take care that no one touches eyes directly. People generally hv the habbit of removing dirt from baby's eyes with fingers - stop that- even when eyes are fine.
For normal eyes, they shd be cleaned with wet/damp cotton ball.
Use different cotton ball for each eye as infection transmits from one to another eye like this.
Consult the doc immidiately. If you dont find doc's answer satisfactory, consult another paediatrician.
Also ask doc on how to clean eyes. My instructions here may not be clear enough, its better that the doc shows u how to do it.
