During Mahavir Jayanti celebrations, Jain temples are adorned with flags. The day begins with the performance of ceremonial bath, in which people bath the idol of Lord Mahavira and this is known as ' Abhishek' . The idol of Lord Mahavira is then placed in a cradle and taken for procession. All the followers worship Lord Mahavir at the temple and offer rice, milk, fruits and water.

On this day, lectures are also conducted that impart the teachings of Lord Mahavir. This helps people to understand the real virtues of life.this day is spend in meditating and praying to the Lord. Giving donations is also the norm. People come from all over the country and visit ancient temples in Girnar and Palitana in Gujarat. Jains celebrate five events of every tirthankar´ s life namely, when the tirthankar was conceived, when he was born, when he took renunciation, when he gained knowledge and last when he passed away.
