In India NBS program is sucessfully mandated by the govt of Goa. In this program all babies born in state hospitals in Goa are screened for free. Its just about 1 year now and the new data which is for the first time in India suggests its incidence to be 1:200 as compared to 1:1000 worldwide. IT IS MUCH MORE COMMON IN INDIA THAN WORLD OVER

The incidence rate for these disorders is virtually unknown in India as babies have never been screened in the past, but it is estimated that 1 in 1000 babies will suffer from these treatable disorders. The incidence rate while low, becomes significant when you consider 27 million babies born in India every year. It could happen to anyone which is why every baby born in most Western countries. In India, Goa is the only state which screen every baby born in government facilities. Most premium hospitals also screen all babies delivered by them.

If the US has made it mandatory, what exactly is stopping our government from making it mandatory too??? I'm sure the stats of india have higher child deaths than the US, and isn't prevention better than cure?? I got my child screened, but I honestly felt it was too expensive. But yeah, the paranoia finally gets to you and so i gave in and got her screened. The report was detailed and reassuring. It's just the price I'm not happy with, and our government could change that. Is anybody listening??

Are such tests absolutely necessary? I mean, it does appear that the chances of your baby contracting such diseases is quite minimal. My own daughter wasn't screened when she was born, and at that time I was aware of the tests. I just thought that if my child looks so healthy there's no need to actually get tested for disorders which we have no history of. But that's my personal opinion, once there's more information on this, I may change my mind. Me and my wife are planning for a second baby soon....

Dear Vikram,
Its a pathetic story all around, that most of us are not aware and are willing to take chances in life. Its good to take risks but not with your baby. We have come accross cases where babies appear normal but do not dont achieve mile stones and when parents come to us, Its too late. Because the screening of IEM´ s require just 1 drop of blood to detect over 40 disorders. Do not take any chances with your babies life, its precious, What if that 1 in 1000 baby would be mine? These disorders are treatable if detected early. Please educate yourself and the society around you the importance of screening of IEM.
