hello everybody, my daughter is 4 years old . I started sing gayatri mantra with her when she was so young . That time she used to listen and watch my lips without blinking her eyes . And from 2 years she started to chant gayatri mantra by herself .Now she chants very perfectly . Every night before going to sleep we both chant gayatri mantra and have a good sleep .

Here's a great way to sing bhajans: get a small kareoke machine. I have an old one at home and play it in the evening. Children really like to sing along when they know that everyone is listening.

For my children, they know only the tv themes to their favorite tv shows on Pogo. We pray together and they mimic the rtythm but no one really knows what the hymns mean. Perhaps that is the beauty of mantras in that they are perfect nonsense that bring utter peace.
Only grandmom knows proper mantras inmy house and she is dying. So there is no one left to pass her legacy

Even I enjoy mantras... The bliss of the Gayatri mantra cannot be compared to any other sound... One has to be sincere and devoted to the recitation of the Gayatri mantra for it to bring about fruits....

I love reciting or hearing anything in Sanskrit, irrespective of whether I understand it or not. There are so many French, Italian and Spanish songs that are immeasurably beautiful, yet the lyrics mean nothing to me. On Travel and Living, the other day I saw a program on Siberia. The fol song of the mountains- it was so beautiful that there were tears in my eyes. Music truly knows no langguage.

The Shanti hymn mentioned in the article is eternal and lasting. There is no need for being hindu - it is just beautiful

Subject: beauty of mantras
Date: 2007-06-05
As a child i grew up hearing mantras chanted in my hindu friends households. Other religions too have their equivalents. And i awlays loved the sounds of these mantras or sacred chnats from all religions, even though i had no idea what they meant.
It is only after growing up that i had access to their translations and realised the beauty of the thought contained in these verses. But this did not affect my enjoyment of the resonance of their sounds.
Thta i think is the true beauty of the mantras. They really sound as good as what they say.

I don't think we should make our children recite mantras from other religions. i put my child in a Christian school. he recites the 'almighty god' prayer there everyday. now he wants to be a Christian. i dont know what to do as i cant change the school. never teach other faiths prayers.

There is nothing wrong with reciting the prayers of any religion. As regards wanting to become christian, it is always a passing phase.
However, do not react negatively tom this in front of your son, becoz this is the way u will only strengthen his desire. Instead remain cool about it and ask him questions as if you are interested. Draw parallels between what he tells you abt christianity and your own faith.
