Foetal Growth Movements:Archie-analytic testing and due date
2005-09-12
Name: Pinky I am currently in US and had my second u/s done today. I am 27 years old. The u/s was for analytic testing done for detecting down's syndrome and other defects. This test includes the AFP test + other blood screening. My LMP was on 18th June and I ovulated very late in that cycle, around 9th July, on the 22nd day of my cycle out of a 30 day cycle, which is quite late.
I had my second u/s done today and it came out at 11 weeks and 5 days. My initial due date was March 23 and now it is April 1, 2006. The u/s doctor measured the thickness of the baby's neck and said, it is not that thick which would cause alarming signs for down syndrome. In this test, I am scheduled for another blood test at 15 to 16 weeks. They will combine both the blood test results and then only give me the resutls.

Archie, I am little worried at this point. I am not much concerned about the due date, but I am very much concerned about my baby's health. Does change in due date and late ovulation has to do with detecting chromosomal and other abnormalities. Please explain.

Thanking you in advance,
Pinky.

Dear Pinky, the word AFP and Down syndrome really terrifies me as I had the same problem. My first baby had spina bifidia and I lost him in 5th month. Later I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. This is my third pregnancy and they suspected it for this baby also. I had very tough time and do understand ur concern.

I got Amniosynthesis done for me in week 20th which showed everything was normal. SO BE POSITIVE. Not always the reports they suspect come true. If ur Dr suggests do go for this test. I heard the wrong calculation of EDD also gives a positive result for AFP. So don't worry.

I wish u goodluck.

Hello Vara,

I am slowly recovering from a fetal demise at 17th week of pregnancy. Though I got a low AFP value we later learnt that his chromosomes were fine.

My first son is 2 1/2. But we would really like to have another child. How old is your daughter? I cannot imagine what you went through during her pregnancy. It was very nice to hear someone who had a successful pregnancy after losing a baby.

My hearty wishes to you. My prayers are with you.

dear pinky,
honestly your concern is valid. It's most important that baby is fine than delayed edd or advanced.

I think your second ultrasound for anamoly scan would be scheduled around week 20, when most organs are developed and easier to estimate on defects than today at 11th week, so do not carry any tension with you and have faith till next ulrasound.

YOur AFP test must be done after completion of 15 weeks and see what you get in the form of results. I am positive that all will be OK.

chromosomal abnormalities are common with delayed implantation than delayed ovulation. Delayed implantation is kidn of sign of mal pregnancy or something wrong, not necessarily there will always be wrong as I have known cases with delayed implantation but healthy babies.

I don't however think delay with ovulation should have chromosomal troubles. Also chromosomal abnormalities at times are fatal and would results in fetal demise even before completion of first trimester or even results in blighted ovum. If all is OK so far then be positive.

I would want to hear your AFP results and then following to that an ultrasound update before making any decision on baby has problem. I think today all is OK.

If you are not happy with service you could change the Dr. and have a second opinion, which I think is good at this time because you have plenty of time to go further.

Keep me updated.

Archie

Dear Archie,
HOw are you? So far my pregnancy is going OK. I just heard from the doctor that my blood tests about the integrated scan were negative and well below national average and everything looks good. I am very much relaxed at this point, however I will request them to give me a copy of my blood reports and then I will post it to you.

But something bad happened last week. Last wed night, when i woke up for urinating, i saw some fresh blood in the toilet. I did not see any fresh blood after that day but just some brownish spotting of dried blood after wiping.

I am going to a specialist for an u/s next weeek to see if everything is OK.

I would like to know your comments as to why this happened? Doctor suggested me to take bed rest which I took for 2 days. I only do some light household work and no heavy lifting. I am a tiny woman with 5 feet and 100 pounds before pregnancy.

Could this be a result of excessive work? She checked baby's heartbeat with the electronic thing and it was good. also the uterus was tight and closed.
I do not have any pain while urinating.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Pinky

Dear Archie, Vara and Aarti,
Thank you for your prayers. I believe, there is some misunderstanding in my question.

I went for the first level ultrasound on sep 12, and doctor said everything was fine with the baby. HE SAID THAT THE THICKNESS OF BABY'S NECK IS MEASURED IN DETECTING THE POSSIBILITY OF DOWN SYNDROME. IN MY CASE, HE SAID IT IS A GOOD SIGN THAT YOUR BABY'S NECK IS NOT THAT THICK, A THICK NECK THAN NORMAL IS IN INDICATION OF DOWN SYNDROME.

I believe all of you misunderstood my first question believing that my baby is at risk for down syndrome. Doctor said everything looks good so far, but he sounded a lot concerned about the confusion on due dates and was not very cheerful in telling me the details. This made me concerned about my baby's growth and wanted to investigate further about the relationship of due date and the chromosomal abnormalities, and whether that applies in my case.

The doctor also mentioned that I was not in that high risk age group of developing abnormalities.

My second level blood work is scheduled around OCT 10 and then within two to three weeks, they will schedule my level II ultrasound ( ARchie, it would be around 18th week. Is it OK? )I will try to push it to week 19th if possible.

There have not been any major problems with the pregnancy so far but the doctor's behaviour made me little concerned.

I will post all the results of my tests to you whenever they are availabel to me.

Archie, after this email, do you still think my baby is at risk? Please tell me.

Thanking you in advance,

Pinky.

your level II ultrasound seems falling around 16th week and perhaps not a best time. YOu could have it postponed a little bit. But may be you could repeat that if needed. usally it should be OK around 16th week but better if thats in 19th or 20th week.

Fertilized egg has to stick on the uterine wall endometrium lining and the process of attachment is referred to as implantation. It takes 5-7 days to implant after ovulation but it may have taken longer than 7 days in your case.

Dear Archie,
thank you very much for your quick response. I really appreciate that..

What is meant by Delayed implantation. I know that I ovulated very late in the cycle , but how do I know that I had delayed implantation ?

So far, the doctor said everything is OK with the baby and the growth is good too. I also heard baby's heart beat today.

I am going for my second level blood work on oct 10 and then can know the results of the test.

I will keep you updated on everything..

Again, thank you very much...

Pinky.
