Peer Pressure:Identifying peer pressure
2013-01-10
Name: Rohini I am quite close to my kids but these days I have noticed that they are staying aloof. What could be the reason behind this? How can I know if my kid is under peer pressure?

My friend faced a similar problem with her son. She was not able to get along with him. She was worried sick as nothing seemed to work for her. After much research and even consulting pyschiatrists, she came up with the solution - in the adoloscent years or growing years, one shouldn´ t overshadow children and be over protective. It would be your instinct to be so, but be causal and don´ t interfere much (unless of course you think they are doing drugs or are in some other serious trouble) and you will gain their respect. Now, my friend is getting better results with her kid and she even shared this with other parents at her son’s school while they gathered for an event.

yyah over protectiveness and lot of interference make kids more rebelious and they go away from their parents. over protectiveness make child dependent and decision taking capacity doesn't develope.

The best way to identify peer pressure is to observe your kid. If your kid is interested in other activities rather than academics, stays aloof or is more conscious about looks, then this could be due to peer pressure. You can speak to your kid about your concerns, I am sure he will understand

It is difficult to identify peer pressure as such. When my kids were teens, I tried to interact with them more. I monitored their activities. you can observe for some common signs of being under peer pressure such as low grades, presence of any risk behaviour such as lying, drugs, stealing etc. Hope these tips work for you.
