Name: G. Banerji Hi All,

I am a punjabi girl recently married to a Bengali Guy. I live in Toronto and am facing a lot of problems in cooking food as I don't know how to cook Bengali food and also their regular menu. I downloaded a couple of recipe's and made alur dum. My husband complained that this dish is made only on weeknd and not on weekdays and should be eaten with puris only not parathas!!! I am totally clueless on how to make him happy. Please suggest some regular Bengali dishes.

Thanks in advance!!

Dear Garima

Just a small piece of suggestion.Although I am not married yet but very soon I am gettin married with a guy from U.P.pretty difficult cos they r hard core vegetarians and me a Absolute non-veg.Anyways leave that.Ur problem is more importantto solve now.Listen to one piece of advice that is whne evr you r making any curries,we bengalis tend to put a basic paste that is ginger,Cumin seed or jeera and chilli paste in many dishes like a everyday fish curry,Cauliflower and potato curry,Parwal and potato curry,Green banana and potato curry .If u want to know more and in details I will let u know.U can mailme at jayeetag at the rate yahoo dot com.Take care and don worry,Everythin will be smooth.I know husbands want us to be jus like their mothers.that is possible but we need some time for that.Don worry,God is with u and we too.

Subject:  How to cook Bengali food?
I am learning to cook Bengali food.
I am Italian, Sarmila is my nickname.
I plan to start a blogging about Bengali cuisine for foreigners to learn to cookbengali food.
I did some research and I found ecxellent recipies. Although I got overwhelmed and to make it short I want to aske these following questions.
Which recipies recall onions, ginger, and garlic together?
Do the spices need to be ground always or can be used whole?
Does kichuri recall ponch phoron?
Do we use garam masala in Bengali cuisine?
Do we add tumeric in shukto?
I have this habit of adding all the spices and herbs in one dish though my food came delicious (I´ m surpirsed.).
I really need help. i look forward to your reply.

With warm regards,

Sarmila.

Hello Sonu,

Thanks a lot for your help and suggestions. I will get recipe's for these dishes and will try and make them instead of the regular punjabi food that I make. The problem with me is that we live alone in Canada and my MIL lives in India.. that is why I have no exposure to Bengali food, customs and traditions. I want to educate myself in these things and want to learn Bangla too .. Anyways .. lets start with food and I will work my way up. Thanks again for your help.

regards
Garima
