Disabilities may not just be politically incorrect. In my 15 years of teaching expereince, I have seen that almost every child who suffers from a learning disability (minor or more serious)makes up for it by being significantly talented or gifted in some way or the other. This may be evident in academics or some other art, skill, or activity.

THe aim of education, ideally, should be an effort to cultivate these strengths and overcome the limitations of the child. THis is not just true of schools for ' special' children, but for all schools - and in fact education in general.

I, being a remedial teacher myself, see these children day-in and day-out. It is painful and at the same time heartening to see them, put in loads of efforts for every single thing, be it reading, writing, spelling or Maths. It gives you immense satisfaction to be able to contribute your bit in their endeavour! I hope that the SSC,HSC,CBSE,ICSE boards recognise the need and do the needful as it will come as a great solace to all those children and parents/teachers in their struggle.

In our society, people are not ready to accept that learning disabilities exist. They prefer to label children as lazy and stupid.

How very true. We do tend to be rather hasty in labelling children as inapt without investigating the problem or heeding the child´ s point of view. This is true not just of the ´ recognised´ learning disorders, but is actually representative of our basic attitude towards children and education.
