Health Issues:Please advise: circumcise/ Urine infection/ VUR
2006-10-18
Name: Sona
Hi all,
My son is 14 months old and is very active baby. last month he had fever becasue of Urine infection. Once infection is cured, doc has suggested to get done all the test like Ultrasound abdomen and MCU. His MCU report shows Vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) grade 3 on left side and grade 1 on right side. After then we have gone for DMSA renal cortical scan and fortuntely according to this report no damage is observed in kidney.
As his VUR grade level is low so doctor said it may go auomatically as he grows but we have to continously monitor him and take all the precautions. We are giving him one dose of antibiotic at night to prevent UTI. Secondly doctor told to circumcised him because his foreskin is tight.
I am very worried for him. Here are my few queries, plz share your advises.
1: If any one is also faced same problem like VUR what kind of medication you followed. Is it really go automatically. Any small advise in this front would be very much helpful for me.
2: If you know any home remedy to cure Urine infection or useful to prevent urine infection.
3: Any idea about Homeopathic and Aryuvedic treatment in this kind of problem.
4: Is it safe to circumcised. How painful is this process. If anyone has circumcised his boy, please share experience.
Thanks a lot for your time,
Regards

Jayesh replied. Hi Sona, this problem is caused when you dont clean your baby properly. Also try to give some amount of water everytime you feed anything to your baby so that there is enough water in the body.
NN replied. Urine tract infection is very common in small kids as they don't keep themselves to clean. As a parent you being worried is very natural but if you have any questions is it better to just go ad ask the doctor that had prescribed him the medicines.
Manisha replied. Urine infection is very common in small children and there is nothing much to worry about it. Keep giving him the prescribed medicine and he will get better with time. And for the rest of the problems you should go to a doctor.
NN replied. Take your son to some more doctors and take their opinion on your son's case and then take their opinion on it. Homeopathic is a good option for your kid as too many anti-biotics can cause harm to your child.

akta replied. y son is now 14 months old,he was diagnosed with vur grade 4 when he was six months old,for 6 months he was on antibiotics-septran/sporidex-2.5 ml at bedtym alternating evry 3 month.
after 6 months of medication, the doc got a repeat dmsa scan done which showed a decrease in the functioning of leftkidney(previously 36%,now only 28%)
on this basis the doctors have advised me reimplantation surgery.
also,my son didnot hav a single uti in al 6 months during medication, his growth is also normal.
somebody wid similar problem, kindly get in touch.
Prity replied. Hello Sona,
My son has the exact same problem. VUR Grade 3...Although he is on a antibiotic called Septra. He is 19 months old now. The Dr didn' t say anything about changing the meds every three months. I will confirm with my Dr about eggs.
Also he sai it was not necessary for us to do circumcision.
Is your son also having very low urine flow and does he urinate very less at a time... I am concerned about that but my Dr says once he is little older and learns to retract his skin while urinating, the flow will be better. But I am still concerned that he urinates so less at a atime.
pm replied. for 6 to 8 mounths.

Hetal replied. hi,
i would like to share with you some info about VUR.
however, i will not be able to satisfy you with enough info because this is case of Nephrology,,,which is not my subject.but i hope this helps you somewhat...
i think what you are mentioning is Vesicoureteral reflux and not Vesicoureteric reflux.,,,.do correct me the spelling,,
if its not Vesicoureteral reflux ( its the abnormal flow of urine from the bladder back to the ureters, which leads to bacterial growth,,,,) if its the one i defined then you can read ahead,,otherwise do correct me...and dont read ahead !
most of the VUR tht are reported from grades 1-3 often resolves at the rate of 13-18% per year in just 5 years of child life.,and the rest is somewhere around 3.5-3.8%,,per years,, and onwards...
if your child was at grade 4 or 5,,VUR resolution rate is 5% per year,,or is considered as severe,,followed by a surgery or longterm medications...
since your child is having grade upto 3, its considered as low grades in VUR,,..
also note that most uncircumsized kids have this prb and then once this was done, many kids were better and recovered totally by 5 years of age..
thats how your dr expects your child to recover after circumcisn..
1.most of the times, the patients of VUR, are given one type of antibiotic that is often taken for upto 6-8months,,,considering that patient is not having the problems related to constipation, extremely smelly urines, repeated UTI,or dehydrations...also note that some patients surgery was needed to correct the primary VUR..in your case its not identified as of now,,or else would have been seen in the abdominal scan/kidney or bladder scan...
to my knowledge,,most children for upto 3 grades relux,, are prescribed antibiotics prophylaxis, Amoxicillin,,,dosage depnding on the age, and possible recurring UTIs....
also note that your dr also adviced you for continuous monitoring coz,,continuous VUR has a high potential to cause a long term renal damage or kdiney damage,,which is not seen as of now...,,,,so be on safer side,,follow your dr.
yes, most 1-3 grades of VUR are mild cases of VUR and ARE LIKELY to resolve spontaneously with increasing age...
now,,acc to your reports there is not damage observed in kidney which works out one more probablty that the recovery could be at the faster rate depending on how the precautions and medications are followed..
please note that inspite of taking antibiotics for a very long time,,say after a year or couple,,,,, if VUR increases, it means either the drug dosage is not appropriate or the child requires surgery...as of now, nothing of that kind is seen....
2. for ne home remedy relatd to VUR or UTI,,,, its always recmnded to take a consultation of a really good ayurvedic or homeopath dr..esp in this case because the patient is of 14months only/toddler and not an adult....
the dosage varies and its not recmended to follow it without a consultants advice...
a 14month old age human body is not yet mature enough to handle the disturbances caused by ne other remedies that might occur incase the alternative medicine fails and a serious condition may occur like renel damage or kidney damage or some other prob may occur.
14month is too young age to handle ne such severe conditions..
3.consult a good homeopath or ayurvedic dr,,and make sure to ask your allopath/current dr whether or not its safe for you to do so..to my knowledge,,,most allopath medicines are not advisable to give along with homeopath or ayurvedic dr and it dpends on the dosage and types of medicine,,,so ask your new ayurvedic dr or homeopathic dr as well that you have been giving this medication,,wther or not to continue,,,and he might ask for the current reports,,,,
to my knowledge,,to prevent UTI is the only key to recover at faster rate..
sme other tips on UTI i have just mentioned in feeding board,,, m sure you must have gone thru it and your dr must hv recmnded you other safety measures as well,,,in case you havent,,here is the link :
4... no experiences though,,,but i have known that if its done properly with experienced hand,, there is no worry/complications involved,,,
genrally the pain is gone in 6-15days,,,,depnding on baby own capacity to recover from it..
and if proper medication/dosages are followed,,and also some special care about hygne and cleaniness of private parts,,thus, preventing your child from having ne other infection during this recovery period...is all a must...
hope this helps you somewhat,,,
take care !

Dear A,
It is a pleasant surprise to see a reply on this thread after many years. I completely forgot about the same. Well My son is absolutely fine now.
- We gave him 1 dose of antibiotic daily at bedtime for a year.
- Based on Doc suggestion, We circumcised also but now we feel that we should not go for this process.
- Whenever he had fever, we went for urine routine test.
- Also we met homeopathic doc but didnt start any medication because we dont want to take any risk.
After one year, his MCU report was absolutely normal and doc advised us to stop all the medication. Doc also suggested to go for urine test if in future he has any urine related issues.
Regards,
Sona

RE: Eczema concern
Hello,
I had a similar query a few months ago concerning eczema occuring in toddlers. As far as I know, it can be due to a varrying number of factors and common foods that end up causing the condition in 1-2 year old toddlers.
In my research I found this article really helpful in addressing the problem:
