While dining out with a toddler, make sure he is comfortable. Ignoring a toddler will create more problems. Include him in your talks and also have a walk with him and show the surrounding are or just play something. If the food is going to be late, then you can divert his attention by playing or talking with him.

Subject:  Impatient Toddler
I had once gone out for dining with my friends and my toddler son. From the moment I reached the place, he was just running around. I tried to make him understand but he was in no mood to listen. Then after some time he became impatient as the food was late. He started crying. It was very difficult to manage him. From that day, I never take him with me but leave him with my parents. Though I feel bad but this is the best thing for me, I suppose.

I think rather than leaving it at home, you should teach him the basic table manners and what to expect when going out. Be patient with a kid. He will be able to understand only with love and affection. you have to prepare him for this before going out. Also take some dry snacks for him if the dinner is going to be late. Kids become impatient when hungry.
