Drugs, Alcohol and Smoking:Drugs and My Children

Name: Editor Do you think parental guidance can prevent drug abuse? Do you consider drug abuse among teens a critical problem that is tearing our society apart? Is peer pressure the main reason for children resorting to drugs? Do parents. high expectations lead to children abusing drugs merely to cope?

With the kind of negative exposure that drugs have got through the media, it is a wonder people take to them at all! Is the urge to take drugs something to ddo with having a dreath wish?

It is really important to find out why people take to drugs, as this is important if an effective prevention programme is to be devised.

So many young lives are sacrificed to this drug habit. Even when drug addicts are identified, the parents / guardian' s are not able to successfully rehabilitate them.

This problem needs to be tackled on a very firm footing. There should be rigorous programmes to reform drug addicts and help their family members cope with the problems their addiction creates for them.

Research has proven that rehab centres seldom work. they have a dismal success rate of 2%. the only way to prevent drug abuse is laws and law-abiding citizens. if drug trafficking and drug cultivation are stopped, the problem will be solved. drug addicts should be taught to improve the quality of their life.

Hi,

I don´ t really think that there are enough drug rehab centers that are really good. I mean the kind of fellowship and positive environment to kicking a drug habit isn´ t there in India. We should have some secluded clinics perhaps in some hill station or something where anyway you cant go out of the center and binge. The ambience will be nice.

Well, go to some good Drugs Anonymous or other social groups that counsel parents on the risks of drugs. They might help you to know exactly what the problem is. Also, keep an eye on all the " mysterious behavior" Write it down and show it a doctor.

Best way to do it would be to hire a detective. Expensive, but fool-proof!

hi, I´ m sure your intentions are good, but I don´ t think it´ s that easy to detect drugs in a person´ s body by a blood test. Heroin and many dangerous drugs last in the body for just a day or two. Chances are that his son might go undetected. Marijuana and other " lesser drugs" are far easier to detect. In fact, many prisoners to avoid being caught for drug abuse switch from relatively less dangerous drugs to highly addictive drugs such as heroin, crack, etc.

Well its simple. If your sun falls sick you make a big fuss and take him to a doc. Tell the doc before hand that you want to do a blood test on your son. Voila kill two birds with one stone and your son will never suspect. Personally it might not be too serious your son might be just discovering himself )

Right. There ARE ways to identify if a person is a druggie, but no one can be sure. I know for one, I was snorting big time, and not a single soul had any idea for many years. It was only when my dog died mysteriously that my roommates started doubting (I´ m a bachelor). There is a need for articles that help to idnntify a druggie, especially in the Indian context. All the articles on the net are written for foreigners...

Thats the lamest excuse I´ ve heard for taking drugs. I think Kids today dont have enough guts to stand up to their parents. They have too much fear instilled in them to grow into individuals.

Vivien, you don´ t believe that do you? Is there any research conducted that suggests this?

Parental pressure is undoubtedly harmful to children, but to say that it encourages the seeking if release by drugs is going too far.

Many addicts admit that they started their drugs habit out of curiousity and the ´ need to belong.´ I feel it is more likely the lack of drive, or boredom that predisposes many to experiment with drugs rather than any pressure to achieve.

Hi, very nice article, but the prevention part was a bit naive. Having known several heroin junkies, such preventive measures rarely work. You have to see a real DRUG ADDICT to know what I' m talking about...

But I enjoyed reading the rest. Very true, and very well-written! Good stuff! Keep it up!

Nice article but there are a lot other reasons why children may take to drugs. The main point is access. CHildren in city colleges tend to do it more because dealers are easily available. Additionally, the article has missed the point of induced addiction. Drugs are often mixed in roadside chocolates and drinks and sold to children. eventually the kids get addicted. this is an isue we must address.

Very good article. Covered all grounds and I think it will help lot of parents who are facing this problem. However, I doubt whethr you can ' prevent' drug abuse. Research has shown that even seemingly happy people, people with successful professional and personal life take to addictive habits like dugs and alcohol. So prevention is a contentious issue. If at all, better means would be to restrict access to money and keep tabs on company.
