Hi,

I am the mother of a 7 months old baby girl, Sravani. Till 4 months she was doing fine, around 13 pounds. She was taking only breast milk. But after 4ht month I started solids. She was good with that too but her weight remained almost constant. Now doc adviced to give formula but she is not taking it. I tried it through spoon, bottle as well as glass. She is not taking it at all. Her weight is only 15.5 pounds now. I am worried. Can any one help me. Thanks

Sridevi

Dear Ritu,

I have notice that it is a common problem for many Indian babies that they dont take formula milk. As per my experience cow milk is just fine for kids. I gave it to my first child from his four months to 1 year after that I started normal milk. My second child dont like formula either and I tried it many time but at last from last two weeks I am giving him normal milk diluted with some water. You know here in western counties they have this milk boxes. He likes it and now drinking 3 to 4 oz at a time and 3 to 4 times a day. I still BF him when he goes for his nap and night time. I think there is no harm in giving cows milk and if your baby is normal even giving her normal milk with some water. But this is my personal opinion and my experience with cow milk is good. Try some for your kid and see how he is reacting to that. If he doesnt like the taste change it with some other, like law cal or vitamin enriched etc. hope this will help.

Love to your kidu

Dharmi

Dear Vij,

I am a first time mom too yaar, but the reason I know a bit about babies and their habits is because I had a complicated pregnancy, and i almost did a research while the doc had advised me bed rest for a few months!!!

I live in India - in the City Beautiful - Chandigarh!!! What place r u from in India? And how long have u been there in US? R U working?

Tanvi is a sweet name u chose for ur daughter...i liked that name ever since Tanvi Azmi starred in Serials!!!...My son's name is Aum (pronounced Om)...

Don't u have a baby card? I guess all baby cards have that weight-height chart... I'll check out the wt of a 7 month old baby n let u know...but as far as I remeber, it should b somewhere near 8 kgs..

Dear Vij,

Ur little princess is doing just fine, not to worry at all. If you are breast feeding her, and she is eating all that good stuff, u need not worry at all. No need to give her formula milk...she doesn't need it. And still if u are worried on that part, try using spoon to feed her cow's milk. Cow's milk is the best after ma's milk...

Take care

Dear Archana,

I am a working mom too, so I can understand ur problem, but phir bhi, try whenever u r home. When u r home, don't give him bottle. I know it is tiring after a hectic day out, but then as mothers, we have to do this. Motherhood was never easy...just recollect how much our mothers did for us and it will make things easier....

U can try giving yellow of the egg when he is 7 months. And remember one thing- when u try anything new, keep at it for at least one week....during that time, don't introduce anything else...this way , u can know what foods might not suit him. And don't force anything on him. If he likes -it's ok, if he doesn't -try different combinations. My son doesn't eat anything sweet - so giving him fruits is very difficult. So i tried giving him things like banana shake, mango shake etc-- at least he takes something (even though a very small quantity)...try different things. But avoid spicy foods.

And yes, buy a small steel pressure cooker for making dal, khichdi, daliya etc, don't use aluminium one. And give only dhuli moong's daal ka paani, not other pulses...

Hope this helps....

Dear Subha,

The reason I suggested moong dal is because it is the lightest and best to start with. Once the baby is adept , of course u can give any kind of pulse. The suggestion was because Archana had yet to start with anything like that....

Regards
Anila

Hi Anila,
i just saw ur message in which u have said that we should only 'dhooli moong ki dal' not any other pulses...
is their any perticular reason for that?
because i do give the normal 'toor dal' (blended along with his veggies. i have also tried giving him 'blak eyed beans' ('chauli') couple of times. i hve given him 'red kidney beans'(rajma) also once. of course these beans i give him in less quantity as i know they can cause gas. but these are very good source of protein and iron.
but i dont know the difference between toor dal and moong dal. i give him toor dal atleast 3-4 days in a week.

is there any perticular reason for giving only moong dal?

Dharmi, Thanks for ur suggestion. being a first time mother is so confusing. I do read a lot of books, websites, talk to my health visitor/doctor about feeding my son. I do breast feed my son. i am adding ormula milk onlyto his solids. According to the docs, baby's whole reuirement is fullfilled totally by BM or FM till 6 months, but after that they need some outside food too and that why its suggested medically to start solids atleast by 6th month. but still the milk remains the main food. and thats why i am adding formula milk to all his meals (not just with baby rice, but also to his lunch and dinner).
last month i actually did a mistake of just giving hin veg puree or fruit puree etc (without adding mlk) and becuas eof teh solids, he reduced BF too and hence his weight gain also slowed down. but my doctor an ddietician understood this problem and advised me to add milk to all his meals and also to increase teh fat content. so i am adding ghee also in all his meals. these changes is working really positively now and he is gaining weight nicely (touch wood).
firstbaby and that too under weight..gives a lot of tension....:)

anyway, thanks for all ur suggestions. every single suggestion means a lot to me.

Dear Archana,
I am a mother of a 10 month old baby boy...And to answer your query- Breast feed ur baby till as long as possible. It might b inconvenent sometimes , but it is the best. Try to avoid formula milk and cereal foods available in the market. It's best to give the baby cow's milk rather than formula milk....and as far as giving him food is concerned, give him dal ka paani ( dhuli moong)...u can start by giving that in bottle, later he'll take by glass/bowl...my baby does that now. And insted of buying wheat/rice/fruit cereals, give natural foods. Once he's adapted to dal ka paani, give mashed daliya, mashed khichdi, mashed banana, mashed mangoes....Ever since my baby was 7-8 months old, i gave him all that i ate...of course less spicy...and yes, u can try things like upma when he is 8-9 months old....

Go natural, avoid processed things available in market, and let him be on ur milk for as long as he wants to.....

Enjoy motherhood.....Anila

Subject:  My baby's solid meal schedule
Hi,
i am also a mom of 6 months old baby boy. I have been explicitely brest feeding my son. but i introduced solids (vegetable and fruit puree) from 4 months, which was just once a day. In 5th month, i was giving hime solids twice a day, once baby rice (cereal) with milk (formula milk).
This month i am giving him 3 times solids.
break fast is formula milk + baby rice + appple/banana puree
Lunch : formula milk + baby rice + dal + veg puree

dinner : repeat of one of the above

some days, in the early evening, i give him baby yogurt/fromais fries.

My son was 1 month premature and was quite low birth weight. even now also he is under weight. so i add few drops of ghee to all his meals and also 1 or 2 almond.

Would like to see what every one else is doing.

Hi Dhrami,

My son is 8 months old. He is little under weight. My doctor suggested to give him formula along with breat feeding. but he never takes more than 1 ounce at any feeding. sometimes he even rejects the bottle.

Is it ok to try cow's milk? In US, all doctor recommends not to give cow's milk until a year. How was your experience?

Hi,

I have 8.5 months old baby. This is my second baby. First one is a boy who is now 4.5 years old. he was born premature too and his weight was 2.2 only when he born. I would like to suggest you something if you dont mind. Please try to give milk to your baby instead of food. With milk he will gain weigh and milk will be easy to digest also. My boy was on breast milk till he was 4 months and as I was in India I was giving him cow milk after that. With that he gain a lot weigh and he is healthy and active too. (Touchwood) if your baby drinks formula milk that is good otherwise cow milk is just fine. Just boil the milk before giving him and in the start even you can add some water also if you like. All the best take care

Dharmi
