A room decorated with suitable light is pleasing and comforting. However buying a good lamp and good lamp shade to go with it is not an easy job. Here are some stuff you need to bear in mind when choosing a lamp shade.

The lamp shde should match the Base - you´ d better think Size, Shape, Style, Color when choosing the lamp shade. Square bases may look better with a square shade. Larger lamp bases require larger shades. Victorian bases need a Victorian shade, etc. Your goal is to match to “mood” of the base.
2.
Compliment the Base - instead of competing with the base for attention, a shade should make the base look better. The lamp should never give up its role as the main chactor. if your base is really unique, you should never choose an eye-catching lamp shade to draw people´ s attention. a simple shade will serve the base very well.
3.
Sizing Rules of Thumb
* Shade height should be about 3/4 the height of the base.
* Shade width should approximately equal the height from bottom of base to socket.
* The bottom of the shade should be wider than the widest part of the base.
4.
cover the Switch - Your shade should just barely cover the switch. Try different sized harps or add a shade riser to fine-tune your shade.
5.
purpose of the Use - usually the more light you need the wider the lamp shade should be. so reading lamps really need a wider shade to provide plenty of light.
6.
the room setting should be considered. - what you room style? Hawaii? Victorian? Leisure? formal? it totally depenses on the color and style of your room. you don´ t want to ruin your room setting with a little lamp shade, right? then choose a lamp shade that really goes well with the style.
7.
last but not least, it is the Bulb - Be sure you keep your lamp shade at least 3 inches separation from bulb, especially for higher wattage bulbs. Be sure the top opening is wide enough to vent the heat. Compact Fluorescent bulbs are great for most lamps because they burn cooler, but you may need larger harp since CFL´ s are taller than standard light bulbs.
